blockchain will contain a complete
digital record of the information
attached to every food item, including
farm origination details, batch
numbers, factory and processing data,
expiration dates, storage temperatures
and shipping data.
"The information captured in each
transaction is agreed upon by all
members of the business network;
once there is a consensus, it becomes a
permanent record that can't be altered.
This helps assure that all information
about the item is accurate," according
to Walmart.
Improving Efficiency and Security
In addition to adding transparency and
trust to the supply chain, blockchain
could increase efficiencies and lower
costs, says Jon Gray of Skuchain.
"Blockchain-based obligations are like
letters of credit on steroids. Everybody
is certifying the paperwork, so you can
actually tie the arrival of a product at a
dock to the release of funds. Letters of
credit can require a lot of time, credit
and paperwork. All of these go away
when you're using a blockchain." The
higher degrees of transparency and
trust could also lower risk premiums.

technology before is to embed trust."
-Brigid McDermott, Vice President of
Business Development for Blockchain, IBM
of a company's supply chain," said
Schwebel. "When, not if, Amazon or
Walmart adopts this, their suppliers
will quickly, and profitably, embrace
this as well."
Companies can test the efficiencies
of blockchain by trying it with their
internal workflows. "If I don't have to
wait on finance to send me an email
in the request chain - if I can receive
notification in a simple way that an
item is authorized for movement or
that the order is done - I just bought
myself exceptionally valuable time in
my supply chain," Schwebel said. "I
can use that to drive my internal costs
down, to improve my margins, to make
myself more competitive."
Blockchain could offer another
advantage for businesses that have
become more concerned about
protecting the security of their supply
chain data. Because it was built around
encryption technology and distributed
networks, blockchain is much more
secure than databases that store
information in one place in the cloud.
Gray uses this analogy to explain
the difference.

"Imagine a piece of paper with a name
written on it, and that name entitles a
person to a pot of gold. You put it in a
room with 50 doors, and all those doors
have a lock. But someone could get
through one lock and replace the name
on the piece of paper," he said. That's
the equivalent of an old-style, shared
document or database.
Blockchain, on the other hand, is like
duplicating the paper 50 times and
putting those papers into 50 different
rooms. A data thief would have to break
into each of those 50 rooms and replace
the paper in each one in order to get
the pot of gold. Plus, with the shared
ledger, any attempt to break into one
location is immediately noticed by
others using that same ledger.
Adoption Obstacles
When it comes to blockchain, "supply
chain is one of the most exciting areas
to look at," said McDermott. While
much of the supply chain industry is
still using the technology and methods
of the 1960s and 1970s, there is an
urgent need to improve its visibility,
operations and demand forecasting.
"We look at these traditionally known
