Dinner at
the Door
Busy people who like to cook
are spurring growth of the
meal kit industry

M

eal kit delivery services are a fantasy
come true for people who enjoy preparing
and cooking food, but who don't have
the time to shop for the necessary

ingredients. All they have to do is make their selection from
several different recipes on the meal kit company website and
then wait for the recipe and all the ingredients to arrive on their
doorstep within 24 to 48 hours.
Given that scenario, it's not surprising
that meal kits have become big
business. Estimates for sales in 2016
range from $80.6 million (Nielsen) to
$1.5 billion (Packaged Facts). Market
researcher Pentallect estimates that
the industry will grow 25 to 30 percent
over the next five years.
The meal kit field is crowded. The
most well-known companies include
Blue Apron, Plated, Chef'D, Green
Chef, Hello Fresh, Purple Carrot, Home
Chef and PeachDish. Each company
looks for ways to differentiate itself
from competitors. Martha & Marley

Spoon, for example, draws from more
than 18,000 recipes from the Martha
Steward website for its meal kits, and
Martha Stewart-branded content is
featured prominently on its pages.
PeachDish emphasizes Southern-style
cooking and local sourcing, and offers
recipes geared to various dietary
preferences, including vegetarian
and no-gluten-added to meals made
with "superfoods" like tofu. Blue
Apron says that it designs its menus
to ensure that customers are always
"learning new cooking techniques,
trying new cuisines and using unique
ingredients."

Food companies are paying attention
to the industry's growth. Campbell
Soup Company announced in May that
it was making a $10 million investment
in Chef'D, and Smithfield Foods said
in August that it would be investing
another $25 million. Coca-Cola,
Hershey Foods and Barilla are among
the companies that are partnering with
