Food Shippers of America - Fall/Winter 2017 - 67

Blue Apron
Started: 2012
Annual sales: $114.7 million
The plan: Weekly subscription plan.
A three-recipe, two-person plan
costs about $60 a week; a fourperson family plan with two meals is
about $73.
Shipping: Free
Emphasis on: Gourmet recipes, new
cooking techniques, sustainably
grown food (i.e., grass fed, pastureraised beef, non-GMO ingredients).
Of note: The largest and best-known
meal kit company, Blue Apron is the
first to debut on the New York Stock
exchange. Just before its initial
public offering in late June, however,
the company had to lower its issue
price from $17 to $15 to $10. That
was due to Amazon's announcement,
made just a few days before, that
it was acquiring Whole Foods and
the speculation (proved true) that it
would begin competing in the food
delivery market.

Green Chef
Founded: 2014
Annual sales (Hoovers): $5.06 million
The plan: The company offers
menus for seven different types of
eating: omnivore, carnivore, glutenfree, vegan, paleo, vegetarian and
keto. Meals start at $10.49 per
person (with two-person minimum).
Weekly, bi-weekly or monthly
subscription plans.
Shipping: $9 shipping and handling
per box.
Emphasis on: About 90-95 percent of
Green Chef's ingredients are certified
organic. It was the first certified
organic meal kit company.
Of note: As of mid-July 2017, Green
Chef had already raised $67 million in
investment and was looking to raise at
least $50 million more. According to an
article in Reuters, the company should
generate $100 million in revenue this
year, but is not yet turning a profit
because it is reinvesting in growing
the business.

Chef'd
Started: 2015
Annual sales (Hoovers): $62.6 million
The plan: No subscription. Prices
range from $9 to $17 per person,
depending on the recipe and the
ingredients it requires.
Shipping: Free on all orders over $40;
less than $40, shipping costs $10.
Emphasis on: Chef'd has no
subscription plan and no weekly
selections. Its customers are free
to choose every day from more than
300-plus recipes, many created by
well-known chefs.
Of note: To date, Chef'd has formed
partnerships with more than 43
organizations, including healthy
eating/diet groups like the American
Diabetes Association and Atkins,
websites like allrecipes.com, food
companies like Coca Cola and Quaker
and magazines like Prevention. Its
meal kits also feature recipes from
the New York Times Cooking site.

Hello Fresh
Started: 2011 (in Berlin). An
international company, it currently
delivers meal kits in Europe, Australia,
the U.S. and Canada.
Annual U.S. sales (from 2016 financial
statement): $338.81M (€ 286.9M)

The plan: Subscription plan. The Classic
Plan (meat, fish and seasonal produce)
and Veggie plans are each about $10
per serving; the Family Plan is about
$8.75 per serving.
Shipping: Free
Emphasis on: Easy-to-make recipes; the
Pronto Plan even precuts the veggies to
speed cooking time.
Of note: In March, HelloFresh
announced the addition of breakfast
recipes to its offerings. In May, the
company launched HelloFresh Wine,
which offers customers monthly
wine subscriptions complete with
pairing suggestions for its recipes of
the month.
Martha & Marley Spoon
Started: 2016
The plan: Subscription plan with a
choice from 10 recipes a week. Meals for
two to three people cost about $31.50
each; meals for four cost about $76.
Shipping: Free
Emphasis on: The Martha Stewart
brand. Many of the featured meals are
drawn from Martha Stewart's archive of
more than 18,000 recipes.
Of note: Founded in Germany in 2015,
Marley Spoon actually launched its
meal kit service in the U.S. in 2015. It
relaunched as Martha & Marley Spoon
in June 2016.
