than price in supply decisions. But any
inflation in commodity pricing will have
to be made up somewhere, and material
handling certainly offers options.
Already, pricing pressures are changing
the way some products are handled.
In 2014, Amazon set up a distribution
facility inside the warehouses of giant
consumer producer Proctor & Gamble
(P&G). P&G makes bulky products
like Charmin bath tissue, Bounty
paper towels and Pampers diapers.
Its products also include heavy items
like Tide laundry detergent, Downy
fabric softener and Mr. Clean cleaning
products. Warehousing is not a
small consideration.
This was a win-win: Amazon was able
to direct ship these products without
the need for warehousing space, while
P&G was able to reduce transportation
costs. While the arrangement was not
met favorably by some of P&G's other
large retailers, it is one that likely will be
emulated, creating additional changes
for the supply chain.

Faster, Stronger
It is not just strategies like the
Amazon/P&G deal that are changing
today's food and beverage supply chain.
Brad Bell, also a national accounts
manager for Alba, sees many of his
clients demanding speed, especially in
the beverage industry. "We're seeing
more in the beverage industry using
robotics to palletize or depalletize," he
said. "The rates are starting to increase
as far as throughput, which affects
conveyor speeds."
He said Alba completed one turntable
for empty can handling that layered and
strapped empty cans on a pallet several
layers high. "As robotic palletizing
increases, it increases speeds throughout
our cycles," he said.
It also can change the layouts in the
warehouse. "They may have several
lanes coming into one," Bell said. "They're
handling different offshoots of main
trunk lines. There's always a traffic cop
issue when that comes together. A lot of
times, our customers are putting together
