McMahan says more of his customers
are requesting rates of 45-60 feet per
minute - far faster than the standard
30 feet per minute. "Throughput is
becoming very important," he said.

used, Bell said. "We make a transfer
cart, which can feed or take away
from multiple lanes of conveyor. It has
double conveyor decks and two sideby-side carts that can take away or
feed multiple lanes. On a slower rate
application, that's a viable solution.
When those rates increase, a lot of
times they need multiple carts and it's
not a viable economical solution."

The faster speeds are changing the
types of components that can be

McMahan sees a continued use of
automation in the future. "We are

those rates. Oftentimes that dictates

A Look at the Future
Already, warehousing and material
handling are undergoing a sea change
in the food and beverage industry. But
even more change is likely.
Online grocery still has not totally
caught up with the overall rate of online
shopping. But it is growing. Readyto-cook kits like Hello Fresh - which
delivers all the products needed for
tonight's dinner - have taken off. And
grocery delivery services - where a
personalized shopper picks items from
a Whole Foods or Publix and sends them
to your home - are also up.
Competition and pressure will only
continue to cause retailers to drive
costs down. Duff & Phelps reports that
large chains like Kroger and Albertsons
"have been able to leverage fixed
infrastructure costs and optimize
capabilities. Kroger's significant size
and scale presents an advantage over
many peers, allowing for efficiencies
within its private label manufacturing,
distribution network and ability to
offer more competitive pricing given its
purchasing power with suppliers."

seeing a lot of the bigger projects
where people try to eliminate a floor
truck to get pallets from one side of
the warehouse to the other. The human
interface is minimized."

And that will no doubt ripple throughout
the supply chain. Both McMahan and
Bell already see more of an emphasis
on removing the human factor in food
and beverage warehousing to meet the
faster throughputs and capitalize on
efficiencies that come when there are
no concerns about breaks, vacations
and sick days.
"You will continue to see a lot of
automation in the big warehouses,"
McMahan said. "A lot of things that
you've seen in automotive and other
industries are starting to make their way
into the food and beverage world." ■
