Avid risk takers, but not looking to change the world. Looking good and
being respected is important to them-and, as such, they like to stay
current with the latest trends. They are enthusiastic users of technology.

Bros and
Brittanys

Making it in life and doing things that bring new and intense experiences
are top priorities. They crave success and pursue personal challenges.
Diverse Strivers They work to inspire respect, to look good and push forward in their
goals. Most multicultural of the groups.
(6% of American Millennials)

Engaged
Idealists

Millennials on steroids: sociable, energetic, focused on personal growth.
They want meaningful lives and careers, and to express their creativity.
Most female of the groups.
(40% of American Millennials)

Lone Wolves

Deeply skeptical of authority. Cool and standoffish, they like to keep life
simple and avoid connections to community and society, but they're not
angry or hostile.
(11% of American Millennials)

New
Traditionalists

Back to the 50s. Religion is an important part of their lives and their
identity; they have a strong sense of duty and a greater sense of
identification with their family.
(12% of American Millennials)

Share progressive values with Engaged Idealists, but reject status and
Critical
authority they see as illegitimate or superficial. They're out to shake
Counterculturists up the world.

education, income and a host of other
qualities.
The segmentation approach I'd like to
share with you is one created by our
sister company, Environics Research.
It differentiates millennials based
on their social values, which are
the underlying mental postures and
worldviews that affect behaviors and
interactions. Sometimes referred to
as psychographics, they're shaped by
education and experience, and they
evolve over time. But most are set by
the time a person hits the mid-teen
years. When we're dealing with a fairly
narrow age range, you can see why it
makes sense to employ social values to
categorize millennials.
After crunching my generation's social
values, Environics Research came
up with the six "Millennial Tribes"
illustrated here. From Bros and
Brittanys to Lone Wolves and Critical
Counterculturists, each tribe has its
own perspective about the world, its
own penchants and proclivities. Think
