you can guess the tribes they belong
to. By knowing the values of the various
millennial segments, companies like
mine can help marketers reach these
consumers with the right offers using
the right messages and the right media.
If only I had this information when I
heard that generations expert speak
four years ago. I could have shown
that Diverse Striver/Engaged Idealist
the error of his ways and helped him
represent millennials better.
Social values is just one way of
analyzing millennials, and it's not
applicable in all scenarios. You
can focus on specific behaviors or
characteristics - their preferences in
social media, sports or entertainment
- rather than looking at their
psychographics. The important
message to remember is, look past
the stereotypes and dig deeper to find
the differences.
Successful companies don't think
of baby boomers as a singular
unit. They look at the nuances that
set them apart - their life stage,
affluence and interests. Likewise,
we need to understand that the
millennial generation - now the
largest generation cohort in the U.S.,
numbering more than 75 million-is too
big to think of as just one group. Until
then, I'll continue fighting the fight and
letting everyone who will listen know
that we millennials may be different
from you, but we're not all the same! ■
