Le t t er F rO M t He PreSIDe N t The HBA is Fighting for You at the State Capitol and in Washington By John Cooper as the housing economy continues to recover, the HBA has been working with the Home Builders Association of Georgia, and with the National Association of Home Builders to insure that the improvement in the market can be sustained and bolstered. Early in the state legislative session, HBA members participated in a legislative luncheon at the Capitol with members of our legislative delegation from the Atlanta area. We urged them to be mindful of our industry as they made decisions related to the state budget, impact fees, builder licensing and other matters. It was clear that they were very sensitive to our concerns and pledged to work in our best interest. Also, in March, HBA leaders met with our Congressmen and Senators in their district offices to drive home our message related to housing. At these meetings, we concentrated on Tax Reform which threatens to change and/or eliminate housing tax incentives. Changes to tax preferences, such as the Mortgage Interest Deduction (MID) or Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), will amount to nothing more than a tax increase on young home buyers, retirees and renters. In Washington, there are many voices calling Housing Finance changes which would include the elimination of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Whatever the outcome of this debate, we hammered on the need for a viable secondary mortgage market backed by the U.S. government which is integral for the housing industry to maintain its footing. We also focused on important regulatory issues like lead-based paint, silica and fall protection. Whether on the local, state or national level the HBA is engaged to make sure that your voice is heard and that positive steps are made to protect the housing recovery. I would ask all our members to attend and participate in HBA events. Further, I would ask you to encourage your partner companies to join the HBA. There are strength in numbers and we need everyone in the industry helping as we fight to protect your interests on a local, state and national level. 7
