Cavaliers' NBA Championship Run Helps Dominion East Ohio Promote 'Call before You Dig' Safety Message
The Cleveland Cavaliers' historic National
Basketball Association championship run
helped draw national media attention to
the "Call before You Dig" safety message.
Video sign boards promoting the "Dial 811"
generating national media exposure during nationally-televised coverage of Cavs'
home playoff games.
For the second straight year, Dominion
East Ohio used video boards at Cleveland's
Quicken Loans Arena to urge fans and
customers to comply with Ohio law by
telephoning 811 two business days before
beginning any digging projects. The ad
campaign also included radio advertisements on the Cavs' pregame program and
web banners on the team and arena web
sites, says Brian Witte, consulting engineer, Ohio Pipeline Safety. Witte serves as
the company's liaison with the Cavaliers
and Q arena advertising team.
The company reserved message boards
for one half of the 21,000-seat arena, Witte
explains. Messages, which include the Dial
811 message and Dominion logos, rotated
with those of other sponsors. The board
generate an overall one hour and 45 minutes of audience exposure each game, for
a potential 905,000 Cavs fans during the
42 regular season home games alone. The

Dominion East Ohio relied upon LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates to help promote the Dial 811 safe digging messages
during the team's 2015-2016 national championship season. Video billboards, as pictured, helped generate more than 1.5 million in-person
views in the arena, with additional exposure through the nationally-televised playoffs. Photo by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

home games, helped Dominion generate
more than 1.5 million views, including fans
attending Cavaliers games and other area
events, radio listeners and web viewers,
Witt says.
Advertising the Call 811 message on
the websites of the Cavs, The Q Arena and
fellow arena tenants Lake Erie Monsters

American Hockey League and Cleveland
Gladiators Arena Football League teams
will generate an additional 600,000 audience impressions. The Dominion safety
message also reached additional thousands of arena patrons attending concerts, ice shows, circuses and other special
events, Witte says.

O.U.P.S. Building New Youngstown Area Facility to Accommodate Growing Line Location Demand
Ohio Utilities Protection Service (O.U.P.S.)
is building a new, $3.2 million headquarters in the Youngstown suburb of North
Jackson, to accommodate a growing
demand for the organization's services in
coordinating utility line marking requests
from excavators and property owners.
The new, 17,000-square-foot facility is located at the southeast corner of
Mahoning Avenue and Bailey Road, with
convenient access to Interstate 76 and
the Ohio Turnpike. The new offices will
replaced the current Belmont Avenue
building in Liberty Township, which O.U.P.S.
has occupied since 1991.
O.U.P.S. operations have grown from
fielding 13,000 line location requests in
its initial year, 1972, to 1.2 million location

notification requests in 2015, sending out
8.3 million notices to member companies, officials say. To accommodate this
growth, O.U.P.S. staff has grown from an
original six-person call center to more than
50 employees.
To prevent potential injuries from
accidental utility line dig-ins, Ohio law
requires property owners to call O.U.P.S.,
toll-free, at 811 at least two working days
before digging. O.U.P.S. alerts participating utilities of customer and contractor
plans to dig. O.U.P.S. ask these utilities to
mark the approximate location of their
underground gas lines and utility cables to
prevent unintended damages. Third-party
damage is the leading cause of accidents
involving utility lines, which can cause

serious injuries, service interruptions and
thousands of dollars in repair costs.
O.U.P.S. was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit collaboration by the former Ohio Bell
Telephone, East Ohio Gas and Cleveland
Electric Illuminating companies to protect Ohio's underground infrastructure by
notifying facility owners about planned
excavations. O.U.P.S. now serves more than
1,300 member companies.
