OGA Pipeline 2016 - 29

Vacuum truck crews travel from their suburban Cleveland base
to job sites throughout the company's service area, including Lima,
located in western Ohio, Apitz says.
That summertime Lima project demonstrated the unique advantages of vacuum excavation, Apitz reports. "We had a project
located in a major intersection, so city officials could not shut
down traffic before 7 p.m. We had to complete the work before
dark. We were able to make repairs, back fill and reinstate the
core, all before 9 p.m.
Dominion East Ohio initially used vacuum excavation primarily
on low-pressure service line cut-offs and line locating, Cox says.
Apitz says the company has expanded the use of the technology into other areas: "The vac truck group already has supported
Engineering in making pre-design test holes; Damage Prevention
in line locating; Corrosion in making corrections; Gas Measurement
and Regulation in making gate valve repairs; and Facilities with
sewer drain maintenance."
Future uses being considered include: mainline repair; emergency gate locating (in situations with blowing gas); pipeline
repair audits; main to curb line replacement; cast iron joint repair;
stoppering; service line replacement; main line camera inspections
and mainline replacement.
"Although the process can't be used for every situation, we are
attempting to maximize its use," Apitz says. "We are still discovering the
departmental efficiencies we can achieve with vacuum excavation."
"Our utilization has increased 150 percent and our team members haven't even hit their stride yet," Tabor says.
