PRESIDENT'S CORNER

HISTORIC TRANSFORMATION FOR
NATURAL GAS IN OHIO

THE OHIO GAS ASSOCIATION and its members continue to play an important and
growing role in Ohio's natural gas industry, which continues to experience historic
growth and transformation.
Over the past five years, the Ohio Gas
Association has taken on several new areas
of involvement and expanded its influence across the state. At the same time,
we have been careful not to lose our traditional role of providing opportunities
for sharing industry best practices among
our members.
In the past year we moved our headquarters to downtown Columbus, only steps
away from the Ohio Statehouse and Public
Utilities Commission of Ohio. This added
convenience and increased visibility has
greatly aided our regulatory and legislative efforts.

We have successfully engaged in several
legislative issues that impact our members,
while continually building stronger relationships with the Ohio General Assembly and
PUCO. We enjoyed a huge legislative victory
this May with the passage of House 390,
which corrected a sales tax loophole that
threatened our municipally-owned local
distribution companies. We were also able
to get language added to the bill that eliminated the five decades old Utility Services
Tax from the Ohio Revised Code.
The dramatic increases in natural gas
supply in our region have brought incredible opportunities, along with some new
challenges for our industry. Over the last
five years, Ohio has gone from producing
roughly 10 percent of the natural gas it consumes to now producing approximately
as much natural gas as it consumes. This
is even more impressive, considering that
Ohio is one of the ten biggest consumers of
natural gas! Our LDC customers saw some
of the lowest prices in over a decade this
past winter and spring.
Large natural gas transmission lines are
currently in the works across Ohio and

nearby states. Spectra's NEXUS pipeline, ET
Rover pipeline, Columbia Pipeline's Leach
Express, Dominion and Duke Energy's
Atlantic Coast Pipeline, and North Coast
Gas Transmission's Oregon Lateral, collectively involve several billion dollars of
new investment and will bring Utica and
Marcellus Shale Gas to expanded markets.
At the same time, we are seeing increased
local opposition to pipeline projects in
several different parts of Ohio. As part of
increasing our external engagement, the
Ohio Gas Association has and will continue
to promote these and other projects as
part of our mission to provide safe, clean,
reliable and affordable natural gas to
our customers.
A new area of involvement for the Ohio
Gas Association will be in the creation and
promotion of a college scholarship program. We are currently in the process of
setting up a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity for
the sole purpose of raising money for and
providing college scholarships to qualified
applicants who are interested in pursuing
a career in the natural gas industry. We are
very encouraged about the prospects of
this new venture and the impact it will have
in the years to come.
Looking ahead, one of the biggest
changes you should expect to see will be the
location of our 2017 OGA Technical Seminar.
Building on our recent past successes of
this event (2016 was an attendance record)
we will be moving it to the Nationwide
Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio.
The facility is far larger and it will provide
us with the opportunity to offer additional/
expanded topics as well as more convenience for our affiliate members.
As I begin my sixth year at the Ohio Gas
Association, please allow me again to thank
you for allowing me the opportunity to
serve as your president. Most importantly,
I would like to thank all of you for your continued involvement in our association.
