OGA Pipeline 2018 - 10

CHAIR'S REPORT

OGA AND ITS MEMBERS CONTINUE
TO GROW IN VALUE, RELEVANCE
AND COMMUNITY SERVICE
I HAVE SERVED ON The Board of Trustees of the Ohio
Gas Association since 2012. Last fall it was my honor
to be elected as Chair of the Board. Since that time,
it's been my pleasure to watch this member-driven
organization grow its membership, grow the benefits
of being an OGA member and also grow in the spirit
of philanthropy.
While none of these happened overnight, we have
BY COLLEEN
seen some exciting changes happen very recently,
RYAN
thanks to the great team on the Executive Board, the
Board of Trustees and the Committee chairs, supported
by the work of their committees, and I'd like to share
with you just some of highlights we are most proud of.
In terms of growing value to our members, last year
we voted to restructure our dues. As a result, the
Contractor Safety Bulletin is now included as a perk to
our members. That went into effect at the beginning
of 2018 and has already proved to be a benefit, both
to current members, but also an attraction to potential
new member companies.
In March we held a very successful
OGA continues to
Technical Seminar at the Nationwide
evolve in new and
Hotel & Conference Center. This year,
important ways, offer we added a third track of presentations,
meant to be a primer on the natural gas
great value to our
industry. The track consisted of briefings
member companies on a number of topics, including Natural
and to educate our
Gas 101, Intro to Gas Measurement, Intro
communities and
to Corrosion, and Intro to Media Relations.
I think these tracks were among the
elected leaders on

introduction-level track at our Technical
Seminar in 2019. This is the perfect opportunity to send
employees new to your organization, or employees who
might not be on the "operations" side of the business.
It not only gives them exposure to topics they might
not get otherwise, but the Technical Seminar is a great
networking and learning opportunity, especially for
those new to the utility business.
For quite a few years now, the organization has been
trying to create a mutual assistance program for our
members, particularly those smaller member companies who don't necessarily have the assets they might
need in an emergency, and, for numerous reasons, it

10

never came to fruition. I'm proud to say that last year
we were finally successful!
The OGA has developed a voluntary mutual assistance program for our members, patterned after the
very effective American Gas Association model. This
opt-in program allows a member company to request
assistance from other participating companies in times
of need. The program is free to use and more information on joining is housed on our website under the
"Resources" tab. We would love to see you all sign up!
And, on the philanthropy front, we are now in the second year of our scholarship program, funded through
donations to the OGA Scholarship Foundation. The
scholarship is focused on identifying young adults interested in the natural gas industry and encouraging them
to pursue those interests through education. In our
first year we had nearly 40 applicants for the scholarship and this year we had over 130 applications that
met our criteria - talk about growth and getting the
word out! Special thanks to our Scholarship committee,
consisting of Andy Sonderman, Richard Dickerson,
Jimmy Stewart, Vanessa Hamilton, Dave Detty,
Richard Walden, Mark Ramser, Kurt Waite, Rob Black,
and Sandy Roller.
You can learn more about our Scholarship winners
from last year in this edition of OGA Pipeline Magazine
2018. Thanks to those who attended our recent
Second Annual Scholarship Fundraiser & Golf Outing
at The Lakes Golf and Country Club in Westerville. All
proceeds went directly to our scholarship fund.
As you can see, OGA continues to evolve in new and
important ways, offer great value to our member companies and to educate our communities and elected
leaders on the importance and safety of natural gas.
The OGA is always looking for member companies to
become more involved and engaged, as well as listening
to your good ideas, so we can continue to improve your
membership experience. Also, if you've not checked out
our website recently, go to www.ohiogasassoc.org to
see our new look.
I look forward to seeing you at a future event and
thank you for your support of the Ohio Gas Association
and our industry.
Colleen Ryan is President, Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio.
