"The acquisition allowed for a greater
opportunity for individuals' growth in their
careers through diverse assignments, learning, technology advancements and experience. This was evident not only in the areas
of engineering and operations, but also as
we considered the growth and evolution
of people-focused programs such as diversity and inclusion, leadership development
and mentoring."
In 2000, NiSource, Inc., based in
Merrillville, Indiana, acquired Columbia
Energy Group, the Herndon, Virginiabased parent of Columbia Gas of Ohio, in a
$6 billion transaction. After the acquisition,
Columbia Gas of Ohio retained its longtime
brand, continuing to serve Ohio customers,
as "A NiSource Company."
"People know the Columbia Gas name,"
explains Dan Creekmur, President of
Columbia Gas of Ohio. "They know that
we protect and serve their community, they

President, State Regulation, who joined
the former East Ohio Gas in 1986.

Commission of Ohio, which had to
approve the Dominion acquisition and
name change, "took things all in stride."
However, the transition to the Dominion

East Ohio name took time for customers
and the general public to embrace. After
all, they had been accustomed to dealing
with East Ohio Gas since 1898.
"I'd say the name change came more
readily to our employees than our customers," Murphy says. "Of course, when your
paycheck says 'Dominion,' it's a little easier
to remember! While some of our employees
still slip into the East Ohio name - it is, after
all, still our 'official' registered name - it's
