Hunter Barnes' Internship Experience Brings
Classroom Lessons to Life in Utica Shale Field
AS A HALLIBURTON INTERN in Ohio's Utica
Shale Field, Hunter Barnes' hands-on field
experience is bringing her Marietta College
classroom learning to life.
As a student in Marietta College's renowned
Petroleum Engineering program, Barnes is
learning some key lessons from textbooks and
classroom lectures. However, Barnes says her
hands-on experience as a Halliburton intern
in the Ohio Utica Shale field has really brought
those lessons to life.
Barnes, one of the inaugural Ohio Gas
Association Scholarship winners, a rising junior
at Marietta College, is grateful to receive the
scholarship. "The OGA Scholarship has helped
eliminate some of the financial burden of
going to college," she says. "Being able to fund part of my college
expenses with scholarships takes a huge weight off my shoulders
and allows me to focus more on my education and career goals.
Those goals include a job in the natural gas and petroleum industry, and, Barnes points out, her first internship with Halliburton is
a milestone on her career quest.
"This summer I obtained my first internship with Halliburton,"
she says. "I am a Field Engineering Intern with a focus on production enhancement. So far this internship has been the best
experience yet because I'm finally getting to see a lot of the tools
I've learned about at college up close and in use."
The internship has provided Barnes "the opportunity to go out
into the field nearly every day and I am getting to work alongside
other engineers, but I also work right alongside the frack hands,"
she adds. "Working with the frack hands has really shown me
that they're a huge part of what we do, and without all of their
hard work we wouldn't be able to do the job we do as engineers."
Barnes explains that her internship "has been such a great
experience and I didn't have any expectations coming into this

internship. I just went into this internship planning to learn as
much as possible and so far I have done just that."
Barnes had invested a great deal of time and study into her
future career, even before she enrolled in Marietta College. "I completed an associate's degree in electro-mechanical engineering
while I was in high school, which helped me decide that I wanted
to do engineering, but not electrical or mechanical."
She decided to take a summer course, in which she earned an oil
and gas compression station operation certificate. "I really enjoyed
this summer course and I knew I wanted to go into this industry,
so that's what prompted my search for petroleum engineering
schools," she says.
"Taking college courses in high school really helped give me
the hard work ethic that I have today in college," she says. "These
courses also helped me with knowing what to expect when it
came to the amount of work given to us to complete and how to
efficiently get that work done. I'm also much better at managing
my time and planning out my weeks ahead of time thanks to
taking these courses."
