Non-Traditional Scholarship Recipient
Returns to College to Fulfill Lifelong
Engineering Dream
BY ALYSSIA OSHODI

WHEN DIANA MCGRAW, 37, was a
young girl growing up in Tajikistan, she
had dreams of following in her parents'
footsteps and becoming an engineer. But,
when she told her mother about her plans,
her mother discouraged her.
"My mother warned me that being a
female engineer in a 'man's world' would
be extremely challenging," McGraw recalls.
"She encouraged me to look into linguistics
as she thought this would be a more appropriate job." McGraw didn't know then that
her life experiences would eventually lead
her back to her childhood dream.
Due to a civil war in her home country,
McGraw and her family were forced to leave
Tajikistan when she was only 12 years old
and move to Russia. The transition was difficult for McGraw, and, due to the move,
she had missed a very foundational year
in school, which took a toll on her grades.
However, she was able to recover and eventually thrive in her new environment.
After graduating from high school with
honors, she considered pursuing medicine, but ultimately followed her mother's
advice. She was admitted to Ulyanovsk State
University, where she majored in translation,
linguistics and intercultural communication.
During her time at the university,
McGraw spent two summers studying in
the United States - participating in a foreign exchange program and working at
Estes Park in Colorado. After graduating

from the university, McGraw spent two
years working as an interpreter for an aircraft maintenance facility.
McGraw would again experience culture shock when she moved to Marietta,
Ohio, to be with her fiancé. A year later,
she became pregnant with her twin boys.
While caring for her sons, she was able to
work from home utilizing her linguistics
degree as a language course developer.
Once the boys were school-age, McGraw
decided it was time to revisit her dream of
becoming an engineer. After completing
a semester of prerequisite classes at a local
community college, she took her chances
at applying for Marietta College's petroleum engineering program. McGraw's hard
work paid off as she was one of six students
accepted into the program in 2014.
During her time in the program, McGraw
has successfully managed the challenges
associated with being a non-traditional
student, while also maintaining a high
GPA. She found her fellow students and
staff to be very supportive. She also

of encouragement.
"Raising children while attending school
has proven challenging - both financially
and academically, but I'm also able to show
my boys the value and importance of education," McGraw says. "They know anything
is possible as long as you work hard for it.
They're very proud of me."
Diana walked in Marietta College's
spring commencement and will officially
complete her degree this December. She'll
spend the summer in Houston, Texas,
interning as a reservoir engineer, before
returning to Marietta in the fall.
