PRESIDENT'S CORNER

OGA AND MEMBER COMPANIES HELP
LEAD HISTORIC OHIO ENERGY
INDUSTRY GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT

THE OHIO GAS ASSOCIATION and our
member companies continue to play an
important role in Ohio's natural gas industry, as it has experienced historic growth and
transformation over the last several years.
Over the past seven years, the Ohio Gas
Association has taken on several new areas
of involvement and expanded its influence
across the state. At the same time, we have
been careful not to lose our traditional role
of providing opportunities for sharing
industry best practices among our members. Our reinvigorated standing committees meet regularly and help our members
to share important news and information
with one another.
We recently reconvened our Distribution
Integrity Management Program ad hoc
committee with record attendance. Our
March Technical Seminar has seen substantial growth, moved to a larger venue
and now offers several additional topics
geared to field staff. We consistently offer
at least three, one-day seminars to our
members each year, which also generate
strong attendance.
None of these things could happen
without the continued support and
engagement of our member companies
and, especially, our committee chairs and

trustees. The Ohio Gas Association is an
organization that they can all be proud of!
We also have successfully engaged
in several legislative issues that impact
our members, while continually building stronger relationships with the Ohio
General Assembly and the Public Utilities
Commission of Ohio.
Currently, we are advocating legislation
to crack down on people who assault utility
workers in the field and another bill to protect our industry's critical infrastructure. We
also will be heavily engaged in upcoming
discussions about revising Ohio's underground damage prevention law, just as we
were a few years ago.
Our Scholarship Foundation recently
awarded twelve scholarships to extremely
impressive college students, who are interested in pursuing careers in the natural
gas industry. This is an increase from five
awards in our first year. The foundation
continues to enjoy the generous support
of many of our member companies. We are
looking forward to the future growth and
success of this new area of involvement
for the OGA.
The dramatic increases in natural gas
supply in our region have brought incredible opportunities, along with some new
challenges for our industry.
Over the last seven years, Ohio has
gone from producing a volume of roughly
10 percent of the natural gas it consumes to
now producing a volume of nearly DOUBLE
the amount of natural gas as it consumes.
This is even more impressive, considering
that Ohio is one of the ten biggest natural
gas-consuming states! Our LDC customers

continue to receive prices that are a fraction of what they were only ten years ago.
Several large natural gas transmission
lines have been completed or are currently
in the works across Ohio and nearby states.
Spectra's NEXUS pipeline, Energy Transfer
Partner's Rover pipeline, TransCanada's
Leach Xpress pipeline, Dominion Energy
and Duke Energy's Atlantic Coast Pipeline,
and North Coast Gas Transmission's Oregon
Lateral, which collectively involve several
billion dollars of new investment, will bring
Utica and Marcellus Shale gas to expanded
markets.
The availability of low-cost natural gas
is also resulting in significant interest in
building natural gas-fired electric power
generation capacity in Ohio. If completed,
these ten or so facilities will significantly
impact the volume of natural gas consumed
in our state in the future.
As the industry grows, we are seeing
instances of local opposition to pipeline
projects in several different parts of Ohio.
As part of increasing our external engagement, the Ohio Gas Association has and
will continue to promote these and other
projects as part of our mission to provide
safe, clean, reliable and affordable natural
gas to our member companies' customers.
As I begin my eighth year at the Ohio
Gas Association, I want to thank you for
allowing me the opportunity to serve as
your president. Most importantly, I would
like to thank all of you for your continued
involvement in our association.
Jimmy Stewart
