Annual AGC Safety Stand-Down Focuses on Fall Protection May 2-13, 2016 EACH YEAR, THOUSANDS OF AGC Houston members show their commitment to safety by participating in the annual Safety Stand-Down. Taking a stand to promote safety and stop falls in construction sends a strong message about the importance of safety on every jobsite. In 2015, AGC Houston aligned its program with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's two-week national effort to remind employers and construction workers about the dangers of falls. Extending the Safety Stand-Down by one week from past years helped to reach even more construction workers. This year, AGC Houston's Safety Stand Down is slated during May 2-13, 2016. "We estimate that 12,500 construction workers took part in the safety demonstrations in 2015," according to AGC Houston Director of Safety Services Kim Mason. "By allowing safety professionals to conduct demonstrations during two weeks, they were able to hold multiple safety standdowns on numerous jobsites, thus exposing more workers to recognizing hazards and preventing falls. In addition, several of our members who are safety consultants Plan Your Safety Stand-Down Event * Safety Stand-Down Participation Forms - AGC Houston members are encouraged to fill out participation forms and return them to Kim Mason. These companies will be doing the same this year," she stated. AGC Houston is expecting a large amount of members to participate in safety standdown demonstrations and include all of their employees and subcontractors' workers on jobsites. While OSHA started its Stand-Down campaign in 2012 with the NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda program, AGC Houston and other Texas chapters have been conducting Safety Stand-Downs for more than a decade. "Even though OSHA is only using one week this year for the Safety Stand-Down, we realized that promoting the event for two weeks would significantly impact the commercial construction industry in a positive manner. We received so much positive feedback from our members last year about the extension period. Companies of all sizes can conduct toolbox talks on a variety of safety topics," Mason affirmed. AGC Houston members who take part in the Safety Stand-Down will be recognized at the Midyear Safety Meeting July 14, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Houston Galleria. ■ Mechanical, lp 1618 Buschong houston, TX 77039 ph.: 281-987-1618 Fax: 281-442-4711 Proudly Serving the Community Since 1979 MPL 36492 * TACL A 19747 E * TACL A 19753 C 10 539156_Raven.indd 1 790377_Cherry.indd 1 7/11/11 11:06:55 PM Cornerstone 2/5/16 2:45 AM http://www.cdc/niosh/construction/stopfalls
