Cornerstone - Spring 2018 - 4

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Advocating for Your
Business at the Local
and State Levels
JAMES BRYANT
ANSLOW BRYANT CONSTRUCTION LTD.
AS THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE STANDS
in recess until 2019, the Government Affairs
Committee will look closer to home to the
fall election. As is the case every two years,
all 150 Texas House seats are up for election
in 2018. However, only 70 of those seats
will include primary election races, while
49 seats will have general elections only.
There are also 31 seats this year with candidates running completely unopposed
(10 Republicans and 21 Democrats).
The Government Affairs Committee will
be busy meeting candidates and providing
advocacy reports with information on key
election information, candidate profiles
and the committee's advocacy efforts.

for more information.
Since 2013, the GAC has increased its
participation in working closely with the
city of Houston's mayor office, local governments, school boards and other public
entities as well as at the state level though
the Texas Building Branch AGC.
Under the guidance of the committee,
the chapter is able to stay abreast of issues
currently being addressed in Austin and in
our region. The AGC Houston Advocacy
Fund allows our members timely engagement with key elected officials involved in
those areas. Legislative accomplishments
at all levels of government are not possible
without your efforts - both through testimony and participation in the legislative
process as well as through PAC contributions and advocacy fundraisers.
To help increase our advocacy funds, we
revitalized our Sporting Clays Tournament
three years ago - and it has been a huge
success. On February 13, 2018, we raised
over $20,000! Many thanks to the AGC
4

Sporting Clays Committee, the members
who supported the event with in-kind
donations, sponsorships and to all those
who braved the cold for some shooting fun!
We also are excited to have added a dedicated staff member to grow our diversity
efforts. In November 2017, William Martinez
joined AGC Houston as Government Affairs
and Diversity Manager.
AGC Houston members have heard
numerous times that the heart of our
success comes from your engagement to
advocate, promote and protect our commercial construction industry. We need
your support and involvement for AGC

Houston to be successful! Once a month
(the last Friday of the month) general contractors, specialty contractors, suppliers
and associate members meet to work on
our industry's issues and concerns.
Government Affairs
Committee in Action
On November 10, 2017, AGC Houston
invited Russ Poppe, Executive Director,
Harris County Flood Control District and
Stephen Costello, Chief Resilience Officer,
City of Houston to discuss on what they are
doing to make significant investments in
flood mitigation. The City and County are

Russ Poppe, Executive Director, Harris County Flood Control District.
