JE Dunn Construction Company's Randy Gates, Senior Safety Specialist, leads a demonstration on "office safety and office hurricane preparedness plan" to leadership and superintendents team members at the CHI - Baylor St. Luke's project in Houston. jobsites is a great way to demonstrate common hazards of a jobsite, particularly related to falls," stated AGC Houston Director of Safety Services, Kim Mason. According to Kevin Virag, Regional Safety Director, Gilbane Building Company, successful safety stand-down meetings serve to reinforce the message of having "an incident and injury-free project." He noted that all levels of the construction project management must be present to reinforce a good working relationship with specialty contractors. "The project manager, the superintendent, along with safety (supervisors) need to be present at the Safety Stand-Down events to communicate safety concerns and keep our trades safe at all times. This is achieved by coaching and Fall 2016 teaching them along the way daily as we walk our projects." Marek Sawing and Drilling, LLC invited CR Environment Safety Consulting to perform safety training for two days. "We wanted to inform all operators about the risks associated with falls in the construction industry," stated Jason Kopke, Principal of Marek Sawing and Drilling, LLC. "The training educated our operators on how to mitigate risks, properly inspect all fall protection equipment, how to document inspections, how to properly wear the equipment (body harnesses, etc), and how to address unsafe conditions on a jobsite with other trades or general contractors." AGC Houston member safety consultants and vendors volunteered to conduct free Safety Stand-Down events on jobsites across the city. The companies brought everything from fall-protection trailers with drop demonstrations to rigging, scaffolds and even proper workwear designed for the construction industry. In addition to leading safety demonstrations in English and Spanish, AGC Houston members also invited OSHA representatives, ER and Houston Fire Department representatives to discuss fall rescue procedures and trauma caused by jobsite accidents. Fatalities caused by falls continue to be a leading cause of death according to OSHA. Particularly sensitive about ensuring that each worker comes safely home every day, AGC Houston general contractor and specialty contractor members have been key supporters of the Safety StandDown-leading safety performance at the city, state and national levels. "Our members' commitment to safety is not so much on the movement of rates, but simply that every individual on a jobsite goes home safely each day to his or her family," AGC Houston President/CEO Jerry Nevlud stated. "Our Safety Committee meets on a monthly basis and representative from OSHA Region 6 are almost always present at the meetings. We value our strategic partnership with them. We are very proud of the signed partnership we have with OSHA in which our participating members are recognized for their exemplary safety and health programs." ■ Thank you to these AGC members who volunteered their services and assisted members with worker safety training during the Safety Stand-Down: * * * * * * * * Ryan Falterman, MSA Safety Thomas Diekiemper, DeWalt Power Tools-Stanley Black & Decker Brandon Boyd, Salus Consulting Paul Johnson, Reliant Safety Solutions, LLC Enrique Garza, Compliance Safety Consulting Charlie Gertson, United Tool & Fastener, Inc.
