Menil Drawing Institute Nears Completion
GILBANE BUILDING COMPANY
announced in late July that construction
on the Menil Drawing Institute has entered
its final stages, with key milestones having
been celebrated in April and May. Once
the exterior work is completed, white oak
trees will be planted in the courtyards to
highlight the expansion of the building
originally designed by renowned architect
Renzo Piano and opened in 1987.

The new expansion was designed by
Johnston Marklee. The 30,000-square-foot,
$40 million Menil Drawing Institute is the
fifth building on the 30-acre campus. The
building is centrally situated within the
campus and will become an important
part of the Menil's neighborhood of art
buildings, surrounded by green spaces
and placed at the center of new pedestrian paths. Constructed on a footprint of
17,000 square feet and rising to a height of
16 feet, the Menil Drawing Institute is midway in size between the mostly residential
bungalows that encircle the campus and
the more substantial architecture of the
main museum building.

Two square, open-roofed, landscaped
courtyards serve as entrances-one on
the west end of the building and one on
the east, while a third courtyard creates a
"scholars cloister" on the building's north
side. A large space referred to as the living
room functions as both a circulation spine
and gathering place. On the south side,
the space opens into exhibition galleries.
In addition to the Menil Drawing
Institute, Gilbane Building Company also
constructed the nearby Energy House,
which provides a new central source of
heating and cooling for the Menil's campus. The Energy House represented a challenge for the project team and the Menil
staff. The original scheduled date to switch
over had to be rescheduled due to a prominent exhibit during that time. Because the
Energy House controls humidity levels in
the building, the date was changed to
ensure that none of the works of art would
be compromised.
The weather presented numerous challenges, with 44 rain days hindering the
construction progress. "The resilience of
the Gilbane team to keep on schedule was
most impressive," said Sheryl Kolasinski,
Menil Deputy Director and Chief Operating
Officer. "From the very beginning of the
job, Gilbane understood how critically
important this new museum is in the life
of the Menil. Not only is the architecture
a wonderful addition to our collection of
buildings for art, but the Menil Drawing
Institute has a positive urban design
impact on the neighborhood, opening
up our campus to the south, creating new
green spaces, street and paths."
The Menil team wanted to give their
trustees and the community an opportunity to be a part of the construction
experience, and began "hard hat tours"
in November of 2016. Students and teachers from the University of Houston, Rice
University Mentor Program, Rice Design
Alliance, AIA, the Garden Club of Houston,
and others participated. In total, more than
400 people took the tours, with the final

one taking place April 27, 2017 to allow construction to continue through to completion without interruption.
"The Menil has always been on the forefront of the arts, not only as it relates to
artists and works they display, but also
prominently in their campus and architecture", stated Dan Gilbane, Southwest
Division Leader for Gilbane Building
Company. "The success of the team in delivering this project, despite the numerous
obstacles encountered, is a great reflection
of teamwork guided by the Menil leadership. It has been an honor to be a part of
the team."
The building is scheduled to open
later this year with numerous festivities
planned.
