FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

AGC Houston Leading
the Way... In Safety!
IT WAS GREAT SEEING SO MANY OF
you pack the Marriott Marquis Houston
for the Midyear Safety Meeting and
Networking Breakfast on Thursday,
June 29, 2017. I enjoy this annual event,
which focuses on highlighting the importance that safety plays and recognizes
the individuals and companies who do so
much to positively impact our industry.
Congratulations to Aggregate Technologies, Inc. for winning the safety
award in the Small Contractor Category;
to Karsten Interior Services, LP for winning the Large Contractor Award; and to
DeWalt Power Tools for receiving the
Affiliate/Associate Safety Award. This last
award is new and designed to recognize a
company for their service and support to
the industry and AGC. Finally, congratulations to Eddie Escamilla, Karsten Interior Services, LP, who received the Safety
Director of the Year/Ray Lambright Award.
Eddie is AGC Houston's Safety Committee
Co-Chair and has demonstrated outstanding leadership for directing his company's
safety and health program.
U.S. veteran Kris "Tanto" Paronto wowed
us with his recollection of the part he played
in the security team that responded to the
attack of the U.S. embassy in Benghazi,
Libya in 2012. It was especially moving
to see so many veterans be recognized
by Kim Mason, AGC Houston Director of
Safety Services, during the program. Many

veterans visited with Paronto after the
meeting and recalled their own missions
and military service. Turn to page 14 for
photos of the event.
Safety Stand-Down
Impacts Thousands of
Construction Workers
I am especially excited to report that
more than 17,500 Houston-area construction workers took part in safety talks and
demonstrations during the Safety StandDown from May 8-19, 2017. AGC aligned
the start of the event with OSHA's national
Safety Stand-Down campaign. As in the
past two years, our members conducted
demonstrations for two weeks on their
jobsites and in their offices. Over 125 companies reported on their safety demonstrations (both in English and in Spanish), which
covered common hazards of a jobsite and
educating workers on how to reduce the
risk of falls. We are proud that so many AGC
Houston members are dedicated to ensure
that our workers have a safe and productive work environment! See page 10 for
more details on member events and a list
of participating companies.

D'Alene Resort in Idaho for the 40th Texas
Building Branch Convention. The event
kicked off Sunday, June 18, 2017 on the
green of one of the best-known golf
courses in the U.S. and wrapped up with
a reception on the resort's terrace, overlooking the beautiful Lake Coeur D'Alene.
It was great seeing so many AGC Houston
members at this annual event!
On Monday, AGC TBB members convened for the General Business Session,
featuring a legislative panel with
Representatives Paul Workman (R-Austin)
and John Cyrier (R-Lockhart). They highlighted the 85th Legislature, dubbed
the most contentious in 10 years. AGC
TBB's Corbin Van Arsdale moderated
the discussion and underscored the vital
work they did on behalf of the members
and chapters.
Following months of hard work, AGC
won big on three major bills, including:

which allows recovery of attorney's fees
