Cornerstone - Fall 2017 - 7

* School Background Checks - House Bill
3270, which decides when the state's
mandatory background check applies
to school construction projects. More
importantly, for most of our members'
jobsites, their workers will no longer
require a check (e.g., greenfield projects,
non-instructional facilities, secure job
sites at existing schools); and
* Contractor Liability for Defects - Senate
Bill 1215, which nearly unanimously
passed the Senate and had been in the
House for more than a month before
last-hour opposition killed the bill.
However, the bill was revived to create
an interim committee.
Please visit www.agctbb.org for more
information about these and other legislative priorities. Many thanks to all the
AGC Houston who continue to support our
industry by advocating in Austin through
AGC Texas Building Branch.
The AGC TBB conference morning session closed with AGC Houston member
Curt Martin, Peckar & Abramson, PC,
who spoke about the new proposed HB
2343 which concerns the right to repair
construction defects and the value Rep.
Workman brought to the House Business
and Industry Committee in defending
it. Two years ago, AGC TBB reached out
to Martin to review construction defect
claims processes and how to resolve
the right to repair statute. He has done
some tremendous work on behalf of our
industry. While the bill passed the House
Business and Industry Committee, it died
on the House calendar. AGC TBB hopes
there will be an interim study conducted
to resolve this important issue and that it
will make its way back to the legislature
in 2019.
The education sessions were followed
by AGC Texas Building Branch Safety
Awards, sponsored by CompGroup AGC.
Congratulations to the following AGC
Houston members who won safety awards
for zero lost workdays!
