IT'S RARE in business to have an opportunity to devote all of your attention to
developing a strategy. Often, we're forced
to divide our attention between the ongoing operations of the organization and
working on a plan for the future. When
we're forced to choose between a challenge that needs an answer today and
a plan that seems like it can wait until
tomorrow, it's not difficult to see why strategic plans don't always get the attention
they deserve.
Strategy really does deserve our attention. It's our opportunity to set goals,
expectations, and establish key performance indicators if we're going to successfully evaluate our success later on. As
a senior executive, it's a time to identify
how external trends are affecting our programs and services, and to scan for new
opportunities. It's a period for engagement
where various stakeholders can influence
how they can participate and benefit. And
it's a model - creating a more efficient and
nimble organization in the future.
But that doesn't mean that a plan
should be static. When new information, challenges or opportunities present themselves, we can't ignore them
simply because they weren't included in
our original strategy. History offers up
many cases of businesses that missed
out on game-changing new opportunities
because they were too focused on their
existing strategies.

So, what's the solution? For your
Association, it's been ensuring that strategy is part of all our conversations. Case
in point, CPHR Alberta developed a plan
one year ago titled 'The Path Forward.'
It's a plan that led us to the successful creation of new programs and partnerships for members in 2017, and has
set the pace for more improvements in
member value in 2018 and beyond. Your
feedback, in surveys, town halls, and
face-to-face meetings, ensured that the
projects we are working on are aligned
with the needs of our members. Moving
forward, we'll continue to seek your input
as the plan evolves.
To be proactive to the changing marketplace, we're continuing to review our
strategies - it's an important part of how
we're working as a team. Looking ahead
to the next quarter, the next year or the
next business cycle means that we're
adjusting timelines, revising goals or
adding new projects to the mix.
Strategy isn't a thing to do and be done
with. It's part of our roles as professionals, and a skill that helps us to work better. I hope you enjoy this edition of the
CPHR Alberta Magazine, and find value
in the resources your fellow members
have provided.
