Organizations are responding to the challenges of a diverse, multi-generational and virtual workforce by using technology to connect, motivate and train employees. The diverse, multi-generational workplace has arrived. Workplaces now span four generations with a workforce that carries different work styles, priorities and attitudes about work; different comfort levels with technology; and may include multi-cultural differences as well. Understanding and building on the strength of these differences helps shape a cohesive, productive and engaged workplace. Learning to manage a flexible and virtual workforce will become part of an effective HR strategy given the evolution of the physical workplace. Sixty per cent of businesses increased their use of virtual workspaces; forty-eight per cent reduced dedicated physical office space to individuals and shifted toward hot-desking (space-sharing); while five-five per cent hired more contractual or temporary workers. Engaging virtual work teams is more of a challenge; learning how to manage these teams effectively helps HR retain top talent.
