TECHNOLOGY IS BOTH A driver and a tool in the pursuit of
Human Resources (HR) excellence. Organizations are responding to
the challenges of a diverse, multi-generational and virtual workforce
by using technology to connect, motivate and train employees.
The diverse, multi-generational workplace has arrived. Workplaces
now span four generations with a workforce that carries different
work styles, priorities and attitudes about work; different comfort
levels with technology; and may include multi-cultural differences
as well. Understanding and building on the strength of these differences helps shape a cohesive, productive and engaged workplace.
Rethinking Human Resources in a Changing World, a 2012 KPMG
study, outlines the smart use of technology to support business and

Shaping a Strategic Workforce
its employees as a new business imperative. Learning to manage a
flexible and virtual workforce will become part of an effective HR
strategy given the evolution of the physical workplace. Sixty per cent
of businesses increased their use of virtual workspaces; forty-eight
per cent reduced dedicated physical office space to individuals and
shifted toward hot-desking (space-sharing); while five-five per cent
hired more contractual or temporary workers.
Engaging virtual work teams is more of a challenge; learning how
to manage these teams effectively helps HR retain top talent. One
KPMG survey respondent, Mr. Westcott, Global Human Resource
Director, for National Grid, emphasizes the importance of investing money and face-time into working relationships. He notes that
technology can be used to connect and maintain common goals
