FEATURE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN Focused on Performance Support BY CINDY LYNN ROCHE, MA, CHRP, CTDP Effective instructional design demands a focus on objectives and solid analysis to understand what needs to be achieved to get there. Clarifying end goals, and maintaining a constant awareness of operational objectives, positions learning initiatives to maintain a clear path through design and development so that learners can master new skills and information effectively. A gap analysis is the identification of what knowledge participants already have versus what they need to know. This analysis informs the design process by providing a point from which to start looking at what is required and what the best path will be to competence and achieving business results. The solution path often includes training, however increasingly instructional designers recognize that learning extends beyond a single event because it is in the application, reflection and adaptation of information that solidifies what has been learned. Training and performance support go hand in hand. Bob Mosher and Conrad Gottfredson's Innovative Performance Support: Strategies and Practices for Learning in the Workflow (2011) recommends an approach to learning that identifies five moments of need in the learning process that should be considered in designing solutions to deliver results that impact business objectives: * New - completely new information * More - building on existing knowledge and expanding depth of understanding * Application - being able to apply what was learned in order to perform effectively, this requires remembering what was learned and knowing how to find what has been forgotten * Solve and Adapt - taking what was learned and making it work for exceptional situations (problem-solving through creative adaptation) * Change - learning something that will replace old ways of doing things Significantly, Mosher and Gottfredson push instructional design to move from HUMAN CAPITAL | FALL 2016 | 19
