V1_20160729 © 29/07/16 9:46 pm The idea is not that we should abandon traditional training courses, but rather that, in addition to the formal learning event, instructional design should also impact the informal learning environment where the work gets done. The performance support approach tackles the bulk of learning in the moment when learners need to do the job they're tasked with and it takes instructional design into the realm of operational realities that won't fit into a lesson plan. The solutions in the performance support paradigm are much more robust and fluid than the lessons in a course can or should be. They are solutions grounded in process and procedures, often resources like mnemonics, calculators and checklists, standard operating procedures, diagrams and flowcharts, decision tables and worksheets, as well as online help found in knowledge base libraries, wikis and communities of practice. Learning design solutions like these make it possible to address the moment when an individual has to perform on the job, by ensuring that necessary information is available and that the right steps are followed. Although not instructional design in its traditional, purist form of courses and training, a performance support approach to instructional design that keeps the end in mind offers a wider set of solutions to work with and positions organizations to be more operationally effective. By addressing the most critical moment of need, there is greater efficiency with fewer errors. In essence, the performance support approach advocates for process awareness and continuous improvement. What happens too often is that instructional design stops at the learning event and it is the learners who end up struggling through those other moments of need until they develop those tools that will help them to remember and adapt what they learned for their particular situation.
