LEADERSHIP MATTERS Investing in Canada's Future HR Professionals BY JANICE MACPHERSON, CHRP According to Staples Business Depot, back to school is "the most wonderful time of the year". For parents, of course, but HRIA agrees also. Throughout the summer, our team has been working diligently to create and enhance our mission to strengthen, educate and promote the HR profession. With the start of school, HRIA is pleased to announce many initiatives within the Alberta post-secondary institutions to help build the HR profession. We are committed to engaging with post-secondary students and institutions to build awareness of HR and invest in Canada's future HR professionals. Last year, our student membership increased by over 30 percent and this year we expect even more students to join us due to new initiatives being launched. In June, Mount Royal University (MRU) became the first postsecondary institution in Alberta to be accredited by the HRIA, providing students who want to pursue an HR career with a strong competitive advantage. The agreement, signed by both the HRIA and Mount Royal, means graduates from the Bissett School of Business's Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in HR and a minimum of a B-minus average do not have to take the National Knowledge Exam (NKE) as part of the process to receive a CHRP designation. Instead, graduates can move straight to building up a minimum of three years' work experience to receive their CHRP designation. The accreditation program is a tangible way to officially recognize universities, like MRU, who have post-secondary programs focused on the HR field. As well, graduates moving to other provinces that are members of the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations can also be exempt from writing the NKE, further strengthening the national presence of the CHRP designation. constant learning, individuals can't keep up with changes and trends in their field. This can lead them to miss opportunities which can give them and their organization a competitive advantage. As we continue through Alberta's recession, many organizations are cutting back and unfortunately one budget that usually gets cut first is learning and development. According to HRIA'S Spring 2016 Alberta Trends Report, oil and gas organizations saw the largest decreases (11.5 percent) to their learning and development budgets. However, it is critical especially during this time, to continue with learning and development as this gives individuals and organizations the foundation required to help deal with the unexpected challenges that can make the difference between success and disaster. Knowing this, HRIA is making every effort to provide quality professional development and networking opportunities for our members. We now have in place early-bird pricing to help with costs, we are creating new partnerships to bring more value to our members through complimentary webinars and HRIA special discounted pricing for industry events. We are dedicated to finding as many new initiatives to continue to deliver learning and training to our members at reasonable prices. As this investment is critical for people and almost always pays off for both the individual and the organization. We hope you enjoy the focus of this month's HUMANCapital on Learning and Development and we look forward to seeing you throughout the "most wonderful time of the year"! Please make sure you visit our website to view all our upcoming PD and networking opportunities. O But, we also realize that learning and development doesn't end after the caps and gowns for graduation come off. Without HUMAN CAPITAL | FALL 2016 | 7
