By that month, U.S. merchants are expected to have migrated to a different sort of payment system, one that depends primarily on an embedded chip rather than the traditional magnetic stripe; such technology already is in widespread use elsewhere. But that's not the whole story. 14 Despite the ever-increasing pitch of the conversation in the U.S. - reminiscent in some ways of the days prior to Y2K - the shift to the Europay, MasterCard, Visa (EMV) standard is an option rather than a mandate. And it's one that even Visa specifically says small-ticket unattended merchants should consider carefully before making the jump.
