NEWS Doubling the Number of U.S. Students who Study Abroad Every student who wants to succeed in the global economy should study abroad. Yet less than 10 percent of U.S. undergraduates study abroad prior to graduation. This is simply not enough. As we approach the IIE's Centennial in 2019, IIE is launching "Generation Study Abroad," a five-year initiative to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade. Our goal is to identify at least 300 U.S. colleges and universities willing to double the number of their students studying abroad or significantly increase the participation rate of their students who study abroad. We are also seeking the support of associations, providers, foreign institutions and governments, as well as of high school teachers, study abroad alumni, and students. Institutions that join the commitment agree to: * Make a significant pledge to increase the number of their students who study abroad; * Take actions to undertake new and expanded activities to enable more students to study abroad; * Join the conversation at #GenerationStudyAbroad. IIE will support commitment members in the following ways: * Award 5-10 grants (of approximately $10,000) per year to institutions that are making outstanding progress with their targets, to be used for study abroad scholarships for their students; * Recognize commitment members on IIE's website and press releases, and provide a special badge; * Invite members to participate in annual meetings on doubling U.S. study abroad, webinars and National Conference Calls. IIE Course in Myanmar: Connecting with the World Course trainers at launch workshop in Yangon In November 2013, IIE launched a 20-week course in Myanmar for university and ministry representatives on setting up and managing an international education office. The course covers a range of topics from the basic functions of an international office to developing international partnerships. Fifty-five individuals from a range of universities and one ministry attended an in-person launch workshop and have since been following weekly virtual lessons with support and feedback from course mentors made up of 35 expert volunteers from around the world. This course was developed in partnership with Knowledge Platform, Monterey Institute of International Studies, Northern Arizona University, and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. The initiative is funded in part by a grant to IIE from the Henry Luce Foundation. Learn more: www.iie.org/myanmar Expansion of the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program The Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) is expanding to include master's degrees in applied sciences as part of the Brazilian government's larger initiative to grant 100,000 scholarships for the best students to study at the world's best universities. The graduate component, designed and sponsored by CAPES and CNPq, will be administered by IIE and will offer students from Brazil the opportunity to pursue terminal master's degrees in applied technology and science fields, especially those advancing innovation and creativity.
