manage 25 percent of the traffic because
of its demographic and urban growth and
the rapid growth of a middle class, all of
this paired with an estimated 50 percent
increase in intra-African trade.
To sustain this growth, Africa will need
18,000 new airline pilots and 22,000 maintenance technicians by 2034. I believe an
Embry-Riddle Aviation Symposium in Africa
will allow aviation professionals of different areas in this industry to discuss how
to handle these training needs and the
increasing market. Focus has to be placed
on ensuring high quality of training and
recruitment of pilots and maintenance
technicians as it will contribute in big part
into maintaining aviation safety in Africa.

people, community legislation, and a common regulatory agency. Funding is another
challenge and it would help tremendously
if IATA had more funds available to offer
more assistance to these airline and aviation authorities as they learn the safe way
of running their organizations.

What advice can you give to
aviation students?
My advice to aviation students around the
world, as well to all aviation professionals

including my friends at ISTAT, is to consider
the African aviation market as a promising
place to do business. It is a market that
has lots of potential with projected activity
increasing in folds in the next two decades.
If aviation professionals interested seek
input from an IATA and IOSA Expert like
me who knows all aspects of the market
and has worked in it in different capacities for decades, they are bound to make
better decisions and get great return on
investment.

Give us a few highlights
regarding the biggest topics
in aviation in Africa. What do
readers need to know about
the region and what's to come?
Safety is the biggest topic and challenge
for African airlines, including the levels of
taxation, charges on infrastructures, and the
restrictive arrangements for travel rights.
Quality Management Systems, Internal
Auditing, Flight Operations Management,
and IOSA courses promoted by IATA and
ICAO are topics I have been instructing on
in the past three years at African airline
companies and civil aviation authorities.
Training of all levels of aviation professionals from pilots to mechanics to flight
crews as well as airline company management and civil aviation management are
big topics where there is a lot of work to
do. Also, aviation training institutes are
scarce and courses are expensive, making it
important that international organizations
offer funds for African aviation organizations to afford these important courses.

What are some of the biggest
challenges you are facing in
your work in the region?
One big challenge I am facing in my work
in Africa is the lack of national regulations linked to ICAO Annexes. The level of
instability of the management of some airlines and civil aviation authority is another
important challenge. The Yamoussoukro
Declaration making African airspace a common space is not yet fully implemented.
The common space will imply the abolition
of borders, free circulation of goods and
