leasing arm, as well as an all-new E195
(E1). The Belavia livery gave the plane a
bit of a retro feel. This was certainly not
the case for the Bombardier CRJ900 in the
new PSA/American Airlines colors. On the
turboprop front, ATR showed a colorful
Brazilian ATR72-600 in Azul colors, while
rival Bombardier offered an Ethiopianliveried Q400.
The flying display offered relatively few
commercial aircraft. On the trade days,
Airbus opened the dance with the alwaysimpressive A380. As one colleague remarked,
"It's like seeing St. Paul's Cathedral take off."
With the A380 not even on the ground, it
was the A350-900's turn to fly. Although its
hybrid Qatar/Airbus livery doesn't do justice
to the elegant lines of the plane, the sleek
wings were a particular joy to see against

the mostly blue Farnborough sky. The A350
was followed by a number of smaller military aircraft. Boeing's 787-9, in Dreamliner
livery, made its show debut as the piece de
resistance at the end of the flying display.
The plane opened its performance with a
steep climb, followed by a sharp banked
turn to the right. Unfortunately the FIA
organization, for mysterious reasons, didn't
allow the American manufacturer to include
a spectacular touch-and-go in its demo routine. For those interested, there is a great
video on YouTube of the 787 over Moses Lake
airport prepping for the Farnborough demo.
While the -8 is already a very elegant plane,
the stretched -9 design delivers even more
visually appealing proportions in terms of
fuselage length and wing span. Whether it
is the 787 or the A350 that ultimately wins

the "best-looking newcomer" category, both
models definitely look good!
Now, moving on to the more serious business-side of the airshow. It was remarkable
how well the lessor community was represented in the order stream this year. During
the show, the manufacturers announced
around 550 firm orders, 450 letters of intent
and just over 200 options. Of this total of
about 1,200 commitments, about 48 percent
came from the lessor community, underlining that this part of our business is currently
swimming in a sea of liquidity. Steve UdvarHazy's Air Lease Corporation took this year's
No. 1 position with 118 orders and options
for a mix of Airbus A320neos, A330neos,
Boeing 777s, 737 MAXs and ATR 42/72s,
directly followed by lessor SMBC Aviation
Capital with 115 A320s.
