The first airline had to come from the
Middle East. This time it was Qatar with
108 orders for various Boeing 777 versions.
Trans States Holdings took fourth position
with an order letter of intent for 50+50
Embraer E-Jets E2. A distant fifth place
went to Nordic Aviation Capital with 25
orders plus 50 options for ATR42/72 turboprops. Hong Kong Aviation Capital finally
decided on the A320/A321neo (big-time)
with 70 orders.
If we look at the order total for the
year 2014, as per the last day of FIA 2014,
there have been 1,833 orders for Westernbuilt commercial jets for civil operators,
compared to 2,139 over the same period in
2013. Based on this, it looks like we will not
end the year breaking 2013's record total
of 3,671 (including type-swaps). A still

respectable total number close to 3,000
looks achievable. Currently the backlog
for Western-built commercial jets (all civil
operators) stands at the record level of over
56 percent of the in-service fleet.
The aircraft type with the most orders at
the airshow was, once more, the A320neo
(family) with 317 orders/options. This was
followed, surprisingly enough, not by the
737 MAX but by the Embraer E-Jets E2
and, even more surprising, the ATR42/72.
The 737 MAX ended "ex aequo" with the
new A330neo in a shared fourth position.
The A330neo was effectively the only new
aircraft launched during the show. There
was a lot of doubt leading up to FIA 2014
on whether Airbus would be able to book
enough orders to justify a launch during
the airshow. We don't know what it took to

get there, but with 121 orders, options and
letters of intent, the new version is certainly off to a good start. Ironically enough,
Steve Udvar-Hazy, who convinced Airbus
in 2006 not to pursue the development of
the original A350 (effectively a re-engined
A330), was the launch customer for the type
with 25 letters of intent orders. Air AsiaX
followed with a letter of intent order for
50 of the type. Lessor Avolon ordered 15
A330neos, CIT booked the same number, and
the remaining orders came from Transaero
and an undisclosed Asian airline. Launching
a new aircraft based on lessors' orders only
seems a hazardous gamble, so it is good to
see a few airlines in the orderbook.
The A330neo, available in a 252-seat
A330-800neo and a 310-seat A330900neo will be powered exclusively by the
