for 100 737 MAX 8 jets. Operating lessors
overall were responsible for 31 percent of
the total commitments, a bit below the
current lessor's share of 38 percent of the
in-service fleet. Clearly, during the coming
years, lessors eventually will end up taking ownership of many aircraft that were
ordered in Paris, via sale-and-leaseback
transactions, but it still seems the lessor's
global fleet share is stagnant already for a
number of years.
Winners and losers were fairly obvious
in Paris. Airbus raked up 155 firm orders,
just ahead of Boeing with 154. Embraer followed as a distant third with 50 firm orders,
closely followed by ATR with 46. COMAC
booked 14 orders for its C919. Unfortunately
Bombardier's new flagship the CSeries, making its show debut in both the CS100 and
CS300 version, did not manage to book any
orders at all in Paris, leaving Bombardier
with just six Q400 orders from WestJet.

Sukhoi, obviously not benefiting from the
current political climate in the world, got
three orders from Yakutia Airlines. If all commitments are counted, Airbus came out as
the clear winner with a total of 531 orders,
options, LoIs, etc. Boeing was obviously
a clear No. 2 with 371 signed papers and
Embraer in third with 103. COMAC could
celebrate a LoI from Ping An Leasing for
50 C919s. Newcomer Viking is continuing
the production of the "good 'ol" Twin Otter
utility aircraft and got an LoI for 50 planes
from Reignwood Group. Especially for the
older aircraft enthusiasts, it will be good to
see more Twin Otters taking to the sky again!
The best-selling type was the A320neo
family with 433 commitments, followed by
the 737 MAX with 241 planes. In the twinaisle segment, the 787 did well with 36
new commitments, closely followed by the
A350 (31) and the A330neo (24). Embraer
dominated the regional jet segment with

53 commitments for the "old" E1 and 50
for the future E2. The turboprop champion
was ATR with 81 commitments, with Viking
taking second place (50).

The Show
That covers the business side of the air
show. Much more importantly, what spectacle did the organizers have in store for
the more than 350,000 visitors? Well, first
of all, no Paris Air Show would be complete
without a huge traffic jam, and this year
was no disappointment, despite relatively
mild weather and no apparent strike action
around Paris. By opening the east gate, the
organizers at least made life a lot easier
for those visitors staying in hotels around
Le Bourget airport. Ticket sales and security checks were relatively efficient, so no
complaints there. One thing specific to the
Paris Air Show, as always, is the monumental effort made by the organizers, at least
