had an A380 and an A350-900  - both
in factory livery - as well as an AirAsia
A320ceo on display. Separately, Qatar
Airways brought an A319 corporate jet.
Boeing brought a 747-8F that was just
bought by Volga-Dnepr/CargoLogicAir,
which together with an Antonov 124-100
from the same airline - and the supersonic
Bloodhound car - formed the so-called
"cargo village." Other commercial Boeing
planes were the ANA 787-9 and the all-new
737 MAX 8, as well as the good old 727.
Bombardier showed a purple FlyBe Q400
and an Air Nostrum CRJ1000 as well as
two CSeries aircraft; the so-called "flight
test vehicle 5" and a regular production
CS100 for Swiss. ATR had an ATR72-600
on display, bearing the somewhat suggestive FlyBra titles. Embraer apparently had
gone the extra mile to ensure their brand
new flagship, the Embraer E190-E2, was

on display. In contrast, Mitsubishi had
decided not to take the competing MRJ
regional jet to Farnborough, despite the
fact that the MRJ prototype had taken to
the skies months earlier than the E190-E2.
Together with the A320neo, the MRJ was
probably the commercial jet that trade
visitors missed most at the airshow. Last,
but surely not least, Superjet showed their
SSJ100 (RRJ-95B) in CityJet livery. As one
of the first of the new generation regional
jets, the Superjet is often overlooked, but
the plane on display was an absolutely
incredible machine, featuring a remarkably
stylish interior.
So much for the "metal" part of the airshow; now it's over to the "money" side.
What business actually took place in the
various chalets? Overall, the number of
commercial aircraft orders placed during
the year 2016 prior to the airshow was lower

than that of a similar period in 2015. This
can partly be explained by the fact that the
Le Bourget orders are generally booked in
June, while Farnborough weighs in during
the month of July. Prior to Farnborough,
the order total for western-built jets (all
civil operations) stood at 790 versus 922
in the year 2015. Just after the show, the
order total for 2016 had increased to 1,043,
ahead of the equivalent 2015 number of 937.
According to FlightGlobal statistics, there
were only 742 new orders, commitments
and options announced at Farnborough
this year, about 40 percent down from
Farnborough 2014 as well as Le Bourget
2015. Obviously this was to be expected
in a market where the existing backlog
is almost equal to 10 years of production
at 2015 levels and at an airshow where
no new aircraft types were announced;
not an A350-2000, an A380neo, a Boeing
