Q&A

Tim Myers
President, Boeing Capital Corporation
Jetrader recently talked with Boeing Capital Corporation President Tim Myers to discuss
his perspective on the financing industry and aerospace as a whole.
Jetrader: To start with, can you give us
a little bit of your professional background? You've been involved with aviation finance for quite some time. What
is it about this side of the industry
that has kept you engaged throughout
your career?
Tim Myers: The majority of my career
has indeed been spent in aircraft financing, and the past 12  years have been
with Boeing. Currently, I'm president of
Boeing Capital, and I have the privilege
of working with some great professionals, and our team focuses on arranging,
structuring and looking at all kinds of
financing solutions for the customers of
Boeing products.
Why? First of all, I love airplanes. Boeing
is one of the coolest places in terms of
innovation in the world. Obviously, this
is a relationship business, and the relationships built over time with many of our
airline customers, the banks, lessors and
the other partners is terrific.
The industry itself is always innovating -
not just with our products but with the
financing solutions that we bring. I did my
first securitization in 1998, and it continues to evolve in terms of things that we're
looking at.
When you talk about the innovation that
we've got at Boeing, right now, we're moving
into advanced design and manufacturing,
data analytics is huge, autonomy, artificial

intelligence, you name it. On the financing side, we're continuing to innovate, as
well. And we can talk later about some of
the financial solutions that we've brought
to market; the Aircraft Finance Insurance
Consortium (AFIC) is just one example.
Jetrader: We've heard at the last several
ISTAT events (Americas, EMEA, Asia,
Latin America Forum, etc.) that aviation is quite healthy as a whole. What is
your current assessment of the industry
from the financing side?
TM: From Boeing's perspective, we look
at the market environment from a demand
perspective. We're operating today in a
very strong and growing space. Looking
more broadly at the aerospace market as a
whole, we look at over the next ten years
as an over $8 trillion market. If you look
at just commercial aircraft, it's $3 trillion
dollars of that in the next ten years.
We've also recently updated our current
market outlook, showing that demand over
the next 20 years has now grown to nearly
43,000 airplanes. There's an enormous
growing demand.
The aircraft financing market is also
growing and doing very well. All the markets are looking very good. Across the
board, you look at the traditional markets;
they're doing well. We also have some new
markets like the insurance risk capital market. That's new, and it's going very well, and

14 The official publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading

aircraft are preferred assets in many different categories for many different investors.
We hold our financier and investor
conferences - we call them our F&Is -
in five different locations around the globe
every year, and we've seen really strong
demand over 90 percent of the people that
attend our conferences are telling us that
they're growing or adding to their portfolios or their investment. So, we're seeing a
lot of strength. We're also seeing strength
in the lessor space, and that continues
to grow, and we're even seeing some new
markets like sub-debt, which traditionally
we haven't seen.
