the security lanes were even equipped
with highly advanced scanners that
could handle  visitors and  their bags
simultaneously  - hardly requiring one
to stop. Hopefully the world's airports
will get these types of scanners in the
near future, as well.
Once through the gates, visitors had a
choice of "show daily" magazines, offered
free of charge by friendly and enthusiastic boys and girls on behalf of the major
aviation and aerospace publishing companies. A quick read through these publications always offers a great update on
the latest and greatest deals and other
announcements around the Airshow from
the previous day. Another familiar sight
for regular Airshow visitors was the bright
red Leonardo pavilion, where the Italian
manufacturer displayed its wide range
of commercial and military aircraft. A
new sight was the permanent exhibition

and conference hall - including the new
media center.
The organizers of the show have done a
good job getting the facilities up to standard. For Monday morning, Farnborough
International in cooperation with
FlightGlobal, had set up an interesting
Airline Chiefs Strategy Round Table in the
new conference center. Themed "Decade of
Disruption; Aviation Beyond 2020," chiefs
from Air Arabia, Spicejet, Air Canada, Flybe,
Saudia and Gulf Air, as well as Aercap CEO
Gus Kelly and ALC's Steve Udvar-Házy, discussed a wide range of topics, including
the long haul, low-cost business model,
sustainability of traffic growth, pilot shortages, new aircraft concepts and the need
to involve more women in our industry.
The debate was moderated by well-known
aviation journalist Max Kingsley-Jones. This
is clearly an initiative that deserves to be
continued during future airshows.

Standing Out
While we can have industry debates at
many conferences, including our own ISTAT
events, the unique feature of an airshow
obviously is the presence of the metal -
the aircraft. Traditionally the opening act
of the Farnborough Airshow is a fly-by of
the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force's aerobatic team. In 2016 the team flew in formation with a Lockheed F-35 Lightning II.
Fitting with the centenary celebrations for
the RAF, the guest performer this year was
a beautiful Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
Supermarine Spitfire P5915. The Red Arrows
were immediately followed by a duo of modern fighter jets - a brand new RAF F-35
Lightning II and a Eurofighter Typhoon in
tight formation. Moving to the commercial side of the business, once again a few
aircraft (types) made their show debut.
Boeing brought a 787-8 to the show in
Bangladesh Airlines livery that actually
