aircraft, as it's a commercial version of
the military Lockheed Hercules, and its
military background was demonstrated
very well during the flying display. Apart
from STOL capacity, the big freighter
seemed to handle like a fighter jet, putting on an impressive show. At the end
of the display, the Boeing 727 "Oil Spill
Response" plane demonstrated its capabilities by spraying some much-needed water
over the dried-out yellow grassland along
Farnborough's runways.

Counting Costs
Business-wise, most manufacturers of
commercial aircraft had reasons to celebrate - according to Flightglobal's
Commercial Aircraft Orders report, actually,

1,464 reasons! The last time we saw this
level of ordering was in 2013 at the Paris
Air Show, when 1,526 orders were placed.
To be precise, though, not all orders are
official. At Farnborough, 400 real orders
were placed next to 863 LoI/MoUs, 10
options and 191 option LOIs. The biggest
order was for Embraer as Republic Airline
signed an LoI/MoU for 100 E175's plus an
option LOI for a similar number. Vietjet Air
made both Airbus and Boeing pop the champagne bottles to celebrate a LoI/MoU for
50 Airbus A321neos, as well as 100 Boeing
737 MAX jets. Steve Udvar-Házy's Air Lease
Corporation went shopping for 20 firm and
55 optional Boeing 737 MAX 8s, plus three
Boeing 787-9 twin aisles. Jet Airways added
75 firm orders for 737 MAX 8 jets.

While almost all OEMs were happy, Boeing
"won" the Farnborough order battle with
545 commitments, followed by Airbus with
389 and Embraer coming in as a close third.
COMAC did not have any planes at the show
but booked 20 orders for its regional ARJ21
jet from China's Urumqi Airways. Bombardier
received an order from Uganda Airways for
four CRJ900s, and ATR booked a total of
eight commitments - three from Easyfly
for the ATR72-600 and two for the shorter
ATR42-600, plus three for the ATR42-600
from Hokkaido Air System.
Overall the most popular family turned
to be the Boeing 737 MAX with 533 commitments, including 185 firm orders. The
Airbus A320neo family came a strong second
with 362 commitments (including 18 swaps)
