Jetrader - Autumn 2018 - 51

But the really big advantage is the people here. I love the people; they want to
travel and know the rest of the world and
start traveling in their own country. And
in certain places like Colombia, it was very
difficult for years, but that has changed,
so it can change here, too.
Jetrader: In late 2017, Viva Air finalized
an order for 50 A320 aircraft - 35 NEOs
and 15 CEOs - which is a considerable
increase over the current fleet. How will
deployment of these aircraft shape the
carrier's future plans?
EF: We will start receiving the aircraft
in mid-September, and we have a plan to
receive them through 2022. First of all,
we need to change our active fleet, which
has an average of 17 years, to start replacing those aircraft once we receive the
brand-new aircraft. At the same time, we
will keep growing our model. In Perú, we
are planning to have all brand-new aircraft
by the middle of next year at the latest.
We are not planning to operate any of the
current fleet in Perú after mid-2019. At
that time, we estimate that we will have
seven or eight aircraft, and they will be
brand new CEOs, and [Viva Air] Colombia
will do something similar. As soon as the
leasing agreements are amended, we will
return those old aircraft and replace them
with brand-new planes.
And we are also in talks to start a new
Viva in another country, but that hasn't
been finalized yet. I think sometime next
year, or maybe in 2020, we'll have a place
and a date and we'll start a new Viva
where we'll continue growing and placing
more aircraft.
We are expanding our services and are
increasing our domestic routes, and we're
starting international services to Colombia,
although that has been delayed from July to
September as we work through the processes
and paperwork. We will soon be going to
Bogotá with four frequencies per week and
to Medellín with three frequencies per week
as soon as we have the paperwork completed. And we have requested 13 routes
and are working toward a few more with
destinations like in Bolivia to Santa Cruz
and La Paz, in Argentina to Buenos Aires, in
Ecuador to Quito and Guayaquil, and in Chile
to Santiago. And we are looking at different
destinations in Colombia that we might be
able to share with Viva Air Colombia.

Jetrader: As Viva Air expands its operations, how is the carrier planning to
deal with a potential workforce shortage - especially when it comes to
trained pilots?
EF: The shortage that is more imminent is certainly the pilot shortage. We
are recruiting pilots intensively here and
in Colombia, and we are accepting pilots
from some other nationalities, as well.
It helps that Perú recently changed the
designation that allows pilots to fly as
commanders beyond the age of 65 up to
70, subject to some medical restrictions.
That allows pilots who have just returned
from legacy carriers to join us for a while
for this type of service, although they
can only fly on domestic service within
Peruvian boundaries.
And we'll continue to address this need
more in the next few years, because we're
not the only ones looking for pilots, but
we are investing and working to attract as
many pilots, junior officers and senior first
officers who want to make a quick ascent
to the left-hand seat on our aircraft. We
are very on top of this, because this segment of the workforce is more difficult to
find and replace, and they have a lot of
technical restrictions and qualifications
that aren't easy to find.
In terms of cabin crews, administrative
staff and technicians, there aren't too
many of them either, but they have their
schools and education centers where they

are delivering enough people not only to
cover our needs, but also the rest of the
industry. But the pilot need is the more
acute need, certainly.
Jetrader: Legacy carriers and LCCs
alike have made efforts to connect
with passengers via expanded mobile
options  to capture new customers. Is
that something that is part of Viva
Air's plans?
EF: Well, we are engaging in online
marketing, but you have to realize that
the most powerful form of communication
here is not the internet; word-of-mouth
communication is much more prevalent.
Internet penetration here in Lima is probably close to 40 percent, and outside of
Lima, it's in the 20  percent range. The
younger generation is used to having it,
but for those people older than 40 or 45,
they don't have any experience with it,
nor do they have the devices to engage
in an online experience. That's why we're
implementing a strategy of classic vending  through typical, safe channels like
travel agencies and tour operators and
so forth. And we are enlarging our base
of providers who can help us further penetrate this market, because the internet,
for sure, will be a key part of our strategy in the future, but it will be a while
before we get there. So we need to use
those typical channels to approach our
customers for now.
