Orbis is the result of a unique and lasting alliance forged between the medical
and aviation industries. In the 1970s, leaders of these two industries came together
to create the plan that lead to the foundation of Orbis.
Today, Orbis is striving to expand access
to eye health by working with partner institutions to develop adequate eye health
infrastructure-so that these local institutions can take action to reach a state where
they can provide, on their own, quality eye
care services that are affordable, accessible and sustainable. Eighty percent of
all visual impairment can be avoided or
cured, so access to the right treatment and
intervention can help improve eye health
in people who need it most.
Since 1982, Orbis has worked in a total
of 92 countries and has made a significant
impact on advancing eye health around
the world. In 2013, through 40 long-term
projects, Orbis and its partner institutions
trained 1,885 doctors and 20,473 other
health care professionals in the treatment of childhood eye diseases, trachoma
control, cataract services, and diabetic
eye diseases, among others. A total of

5.76 million medical and optical treatments
were conducted by Orbis's partner institutions in 2013.
Orbis also operates the Orbis Flying Eye
Hospital (FEH), a fully equipped mobile
teaching hospital housed inside a DC-10.
On the outside, the plane is just another
aircraft; inside, it's like no other. The
FEH hosts an opthalmatic hospital and
teaching facility right on board. Hands-on
training, conducted by the Orbis medical
team and volunteer faculty from top eye
institutions around the world, conveys the
latest medical knowledge to support local
eye care professionals as they address
the leading causes of blindness in their
communities.
In April 2014, the FEH conducted a
training program in Jinan, China, to train
local eye care professionals. Shun Wen was
selected as a training case for a glaucoma
operation. Her treatment was successful,
and with her vision improved, she now has
a better chance for a brighter future.
Orbis envisions a future where no one
goes needlessly blind. Just like for Shu Wen,
Orbis is committed to making this vision a
reality for all.
