year was an exception. While seven out
of the eight finalists were L-39s (including an improved L-139 version of the same
plane), the surprise winner was the lone De
Havilland DH-115, Vampire, flown by Pete
Zaccagnino from Park City, Utah. With its
twin tail boom, Vampire has a completely
different look compared to the L-39s.
Vampire finished first with a speed of 502
mph, with L-39 Fast Company close on its
heels doing 501 mph. Most other L-39s averaged between 400 and 500 mph. The only
TS-11 ISKRA in the field still falls in this
speed category, but the three older L-29s
generally don't reach the 400 mph.
In the sport category, John Parker
won the Gold Finals flying Blue Thunder
II at 377 mph. Blue Thunder is a Thunder
Mustang, effectively a slightly smaller
replica of the famous P-51 Mustang, which
can make it as little confusing for the
uninitiated as the P-51 itself falls in the
Unlimited class. Tom Aberle set a new
speed record in the biplane class and
also won this category with Phantom, a
very advanced version of the old biplane
design. In the T-6 class, Buehn Dennis
crossed the finish line in first position
piloting Midnight Miss III with an average
speed of 238 mph. Finally, in the Formula
1 class, Steve Senegal won with Endeavour
hitting 239 mph. It is interesting to note
that the Formula 1 class now is developing into a truly global competition. Apart
from the finals in Reno, races have been
held this year in Spain and Tunisia, and
a few more will be added to the calendar
next year. Formula 1 pylon racing may
eventually develop into a series similar
to its namesake with four wheels.
