The ISTAT Connection
One may ask what the link is between ISTAT and the Reno
National Championship Air Races and Air Show. There are several points where the two intersect, apart from the passion for
aviation. First of all, many ISTAT members visit Reno to attend
John Culkin's ROAA Annual Aircraft Investment Symposium.
The exclusive symposium brings together a group of aviation
experts, representing lessors, airlines, MROs, financiers, investors, appraisers, traders, etc. This year's discussions focused
on matters that concern most of us, namely interest rates and
fuel prices.
Apart from the business discussions, participants in the symposium collect funds to support a charitable cause, and this year's

selection was The Pathways to Aviation Foundation. Pathways
Executive Director Pete Parker was present at the investment
symposium to collect the ROAA check. Interestingly enough,
Parker last year described ROAA as a sub-group of ISTAT members.
All he knew about ISTAT was that it had a charitable foundation
and that a few of its members were involved with the National
Aviation Heritage Invitational, a competition that encourages
the preservation and restoration of historic aircraft to airworthy
condition and to the very highest standards of workmanship and
historical accuracy. (See the article on p. 38 for more on the ISTAT
Foundation and its support of both Pathways and the NAHI.)
The invitational gives aircraft owners and restorers the opportunity to bring their skillfully restored aircraft to Reno during the
week of the air races and compete for several prestigious trophies.
This year, the trophy for the Best Contemporary Aircraft was named
after our "own" godfather of aircraft leasing, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy.
This trophy is for civil aircraft 45 years or older. Another well-known
name in ISTAT circles, Herb Kelleher, had a trophy named after him
for aircraft older than 45 years with a wingspan of 45 feet or more.
The trophy is sponsored by the ISTAT Foundation.
Finally, ISTAT members use the Reno races to invite friends and
business partners to their hospitality units. One aircraft engine
lessor and trader was prominently visible with a fleet of golf carts.
The fact that this company will remain nameless has nothing to
do with the fact your author wasn't invited!
Next year, the Reno Air Races will be held from 14-18 September
in Reno, Nevada. It's a must-attend event for any aviation
aficionado.
