The 53rd National Championship Air Races
and the ISTAT Connection

By Bert van Leeuwen, Managing Director, DVB Bank SE
This year's 53rd National Championship Air
Races didn't reach the same level of excitement that the 2015 edition had offered in
the "Unlimited" class, which is generally
seen as the most important class of air racers. For various (mostly financial) reasons,
a number of previous years' top contenders
unfortunately weren't able participate.
The 2015 winner, the red and white P-51D
Mustang "Strega" flown by Robert "Hood"
Gibson, didn't make it to the races, reportedly because of budget problems (the plane
is actually offered for sale with an asking
price of $2,650,000 USD). Last year's runnerup, an F8F-2 Bearcat "Rare Bear," did make it
over to Reno with F B II Sea Fury "September
Fury," but both racers merely played a role as
static gate-guards for the VIP area. Only the

remaining wing and fuselage sections from
crowd favorites P-51XR Mustang "Precious
Metal" made it to Reno on a flatbed trailer.
Last year, on its way to Reno, "Precious"
caught fire and came close to being written
off. Pilot Thom Richard is trying everything
he can to restore his racer to former glory,
although he also participated in the Formula
One class with his ultralow racer "Hot Stuff."
Effectively only two really competitive
Unlimited racers made it to Reno this year:
Steve'O Hinton in his purple, political propaganda-laden P51-D Mustang "Voodoo" and
James Consalvi in his highly modified silver
Yak-11 "Czech Mate." While "Czech Mate" is a
very powerful racer, it became obvious during
the qualifying session the plane wouldn't be
a match for multiple Reno winner Steve'O.

34 The official publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading

There were no surprises during the Unlimited
Gold finals on Sunday, 18 September, and
"Voodoo" - as expected - won with an
average speed of just over 460 mph, which
has to be compared to "Strega's" winning
489 mph last year and "Voodoo's" own 2015
qualifying speed of 475 mph last year. "Czech
Mate" finished in second position this time
with 451 mph, but the plane still seems to
have a lot of potential. Sea Furies took the 3rd
to 6th places this year. Brian Sanders copied
Dennis Sanders 2015 performance by bringing home TMK 20 Sea Fury "Dreadnought" in
third position once more. The average speed
of "Dreadnought" was 430 mph, a long way
behind the number two finisher. The other
Sea Furies that participated in the Gold finals
were "Sawbones," "Argonaut" and "924G."
