(such as hard time, on condition, condition monitored), the critical role of aircraft records and to understand the various
categories of aircraft parts (such as hard
time components, rotables, expendables,
consumables) and how such parts are
managed in the maintenance process. The
ISTAT Appraisers' Program Handbook has
an extensive glossary of terms candidates
must understand. Candidates have to demonstrate their understanding of how various
technical elements are integrated into the
assessment of an aircraft's appraised value.

Senior Appraiser Examinations
To sit for the Senior Appraiser exams,
an appraiser must have several years of
industry-related experience and six years
conducting aircraft appraisals.
The Senior Technical exam includes all
of the topics of the Technical exam and
includes 'refresher' questions related to
ethics and financial issues.
The Senior Technical exams are graded at
a higher level, and the appraiser has to be
able to demonstrate a more detailed and
nuanced comprehension of the concepts
and structures relating to aircraft technical issues, and more broadly, in the global
context. A Senior Appraiser has to be able
to demonstrably incorporate the many elements - macro and micro - that may bear
on an aircraft's value.
The exam is graded partly on the examinee's knowledge of the subjects and partly
on the ability to explain the issues and
concepts in a way that is understandable
by non-experts. Having the ability to effectively explain complex technical subject
matter to non-technical people is both an
indicator of a good grasp of the material,
and a skill often required in litigation and
in supporting clients in financing and other
matters. The ISTAT Appraisers' exams are
challenging and candidates and appraisers
often require more than one attempt to
qualify as a Senior Appraiser.
Despite the extensive requirements,
becoming an ISTAT Appraiser yields great
benefits and professional growth. In the
