Bubbles, black swans and Brexit. Observations from ISTAT
EMEA as an optimistic industry gathers in Edinburgh

T

This year marked several firsts for ISTAT's
annual European visit; it was the first time
the event took place in a city-centered
conference center - rather than a hotelbased conference facility; it was the most
highly attended European event to date
with more than 1,700 attendees; and it was
the first event under the revised nomenclature "EMEA," to be more inclusive of the
society's presence in the Middle Eastern
and African markets.

Held 24-26 September, ISTAT EMEA
counted among its attendees longtime
industry and ISTAT veterans, newcomers
and ISTAT Foundation Scholarship recipients, alike. The earliest arriving attendees were treated to a welcome happy
hour at the Peacock Alley at the Waldorf
Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian on
23 September, and the next day was filled
with networking events and education
opportunities.

There were outings for fly fishing,
target shooting and a walking tour of
Edinburgh, and ISTAT's ever-popular
golf tournament, long a staple of ISTAT
Americas, made its European debut. This
year also featured a trip to the Sir Chris
Hoy Velodrome for an exciting cycling
event. In addition, ISTAT offered its
Appraiser Continuing Education Series
and its NewGen Event, the latter of which
featured Steven Udvar-Házy, executive

International; Ross Mitchell, vice president of commercial operations,
Bombardier Commercial Aircraft; Arjan Meijer, chief commercial officer,
Embraer Commercial Aviation; Jerome Gabory, head of leasing markets,
ATR; and Gregory Alberts, senior vice president global leasing and asset
management, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation.

Engine Panel, moderated by Bryson Monteleone (center), marketing
