Day Three
The next morning, attendees gathered
for morning coffee in the Hub and Jet
Fuel Café before the day's events officially began with Pilarski again taking
the stage, this time for his keynote
address. The presentation featured his
usual wit, and he reiterated his point that
aviation is in a state of relative comfort,
though he was careful to point out that
the industry is currently experiencing an
order bubble.
Next up, the Large Aircraft Panel took
to the stage and again did not disappoint
as Boeing and Airbus reps offered their
unique approaches to satisfying the market's needs, with George Metcalf, managing
director, Boeing, noting that "both manufacturers have battle scars from delayed
aircraft," while Isabelle Floret, senior vice
president leasing markets, Airbus, added
"The problems are behind us."
After a morning coffee break, the
Efficient Aircraft Transitions for Lessors
panel met to discuss the need for long-term
planning when transitioning an aircraft.
"A lot of airlines are under-resourced and
don't focus on exits, and they often have to
extend because they simply aren't ready,"
said Ben Whelan, group resource director,
Eirtech Aviation Services, with moderator
Pete Seidlitz, president, Bristol Associates,
Inc., adding that because of this lack of
planning, "More aircraft are staying where
they are."
Immediately afterward, the Low Cost
Carrier Discussion panel assembled to
talk about margins and efficiency. Neil
Sorahan, chief financial officer, Ryanair,
observed that because demand for LCC
services in Europe is high, "It makes
more sense to hang onto older aircraft
for longer."
After a break for lunch, attendees
returned for the final day's afternoon
sessions as the Long Haul Airlines Panel
met, with Niklas Per-Olaf Hardange,
vice president, fleet management,
Scandinavian Airlines System, noting that
"Retention of personnel and reducing risk
and liability in turnover is something that
all European airlines are struggling with
right now."
After the day's final coffee break, the
Appraisers Panel gathered to discuss their
observations, with the subject of scope
clauses again coming up, with George
