officer, SMBC Aviation Capital; John Pleuger, chief
executive officer and president, and member, board of
directors, Air Lease Corporation; Firoz Tarapore, chief
executive officer, DAE Capital; and Khan T. Tran, chief
executive officer and president, Aviation Capital Group.

are a living, breathing thing, and if rates
change in a few years, someone needs
to be able to make the call to make the
necessary adjustments."
After a break for lunch, meetings and
networking, delegates gathered for the
day's final block of sessions, with the
second of two engine-related panels  -
the CFM and Pratt & Whitney Panel  -
assembling for presentations from each
manufacturer and a group discussion.
As any engine manufacturer faces repair
concerns, Paul Finklestein, director  -
marketing, Pratt & Whitney, cautioned
that "Engine technology will certainly
continue to progress and develop, but
I don't see how maintenance costs don't
change, as well."
Next up, ISTAT Appraisers' Program Chair
Bryson Monteleone, senior advisor, aviation
finance advisory services, PwC Ireland,
gave a brief update on the IAP, noting the
program's newly certified appraisers, as
well as the establishment of standing committees and the implementation of offsite

educational opportunities at ISTAT EMEA
and ISTAT Americas.
In keeping with the appraiser theme,
the Appraisers Panel immediately followed, with panelists offering a their
assessments of the industry's current state. "I really don't know how
the industry could improve right now,"
said Rikard de Jounge, vice president,
asset valuation, AVITAS, Inc. "This is
a very exciting time, and I don't see it
as a bubble." George Dimitroff, head of
valuations, Flight Ascend Consultancy,
added that "The aircraft value cycle is
in afterburner mode right now. We were
bumping up against the top in 2015 and
2016, but we've seen asset values climb
again, though we do expect to see lower
airline profitability by the end of the year.
Warning signs for a slowdown are there."
Next up, the final ISTAT EMEA session,
the hugely popular Lessor CEO Panel,
gathered in front of a packed conference
hall. "This is truly one of the highlights
of this event," said panel moderator

Conor McCarthy, managing director
and project oversight, PlaneConsult,
delivers his keynote address.

Dómhnal Slattery, chief executive officer,
Avolon. With a room full of eager delegates,
the panelists discussed the overall state
of the industry with Firoz Tarapore, chief
executive officer, DAE Capital, noting that
"There will always be temporary problems,
but the industry has mechanisms of working
through them. But, a big question right
now is the U.S./China trade conflict."
After a short break, delegates boarded
buses for the closing Cocktail Reception &
Networking Dinner at the Prague Municipal
House, followed by the After Party at the
Hilton's Cloud9 Sky Bar.
