Jetrader spoke with Jacobson about
Delta’s vision and strategy, as well as
the opportunities for growth within the
aviation industry.
Jetrader: Which markets do you see as
your best and least potential for growth
in capacity and traffic?
Paul A. Jacobson: Right now Delta is
focused on maintaining capacity discipline,
growing strategically in regions with the
best opportunity for success and rightsizing markets as needed. We’ve been
tightly managing our trans-Atlantic capacity, for example, while we’ve been able to
grow in Latin America, where demand has
been solid. This summer we will be adding additional service to China, where we
continue to see strong demand.
Domestically, we recently completed
a significant expansion in New York at
LaGuardia Airport, even while our overall
domestic capacity has remained flat.
JT: Please describe Delta’s strategy
for acquiring older narrowbody aircraft
such as the MD-90s and Boeing 717s

instead of acquiring new aircraft as
other airlines are committing to acquire.
PJ: When assessing the needs of our
fleet, we always strive to find the best
strategy to meet the needs of our customers and network in the most capitalefficient manner. We are focused on
optimizing the total cost of ownership
including capital costs when making fleet
decisions.
Because of our size and operating efficiencies, we can take advantage of market
opportunities for pre-owned aircraft. It
allows us to meet the requirements of
our network at a fraction of the capital
investment required for an entirely new
fleet while also improving our balance
sheet. Our most recent purchases have
represented a mix of new aircraft, Boeing
737-900ERs, and used aircraft, including
Boeing 717s and MD-90s, which replace
the older, smaller and least-efficient planes
in our fleet.
The used aircraft we purchase under a
complete interior refit to provide our customers with a leading in-flight experience
in both first class and economy cabins.
