Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT). ISTAT was
founded in 1983 to act as a forum and to promote improved
communications among those involved in aviation and

Dear Fellow ISTAT Members,
It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since I took up the gavel as president of
ISTAT. However, knowing that we’re heading to yet another great annual meeting,
this year in Orlando, reminds me that my time as president will end.
Looking back, it’s been a fun two years. I’ve had the pleasure of helping lead
us toward an even more valuable ISTAT in terms of member value and participation.
Our membership has continued to grow (more than 2,800 as of year-end 2013),
and we’re realizing our goal of more airline involvement (now nearing 400 from
that sector). At the same time, as we expand ISTAT’s presence around the world,
our events continue to draw high marks (and attendance) from our members. And
ﬁnancially, we’ve built healthy reserves (now nearly $10 million for ISTAT and the
Foundation combined) to ensure we can follow through on our strategic plans and
member-focused mission. And, here is a quiz…when was the last time ISTAT raised
dues? I’ll answer that at the conference.
Two years ago, we were focused on Asia as our next big expansion of membership. The conferences there have been a great success. We are now looking at the
Latin American market and are convinced that a footprint there would be in our
members’ interest.
As I’ve found in my work in Boeing, a whole lot gets done if you’re lucky enough
to be surrounded by a great team of co-workers. That certainly describes my experience as ISTAT president.
My fellow board members deserve many thanks for their enduring dedication
to making us a success. You, the members, elect the best and the brightest quite
consistently. They give freely of their time and manage their assignments in ISTAT
with great zeal (as many would describe to you if you were to ask them about any
of the board meeting proceedings).
I’d also like to acknowledge Boeing for allowing me the time to serve and for
contributing various resources to ISTAT’s success.
Last, but not least, is each of you fellow members. Without your investment of
time, effort and resources, we wouldn’t have the great organization we do. Many
thanks from your appreciative and soon-to-be past president!
As ISTAT’s leadership transitions over to Jep Thornton, you should know that he
shares the passion for keeping the society vibrant and relevant for our members and
that he and the incoming team are more than capable of ensuring our continued
success (read that, do an even better job than yours truly!).
It’s been a great honor to serve as ISTAT’s senior leader, and I look forward to
continuing to work with Jep (two more years on the board as past president), and
with each of you, as we continue to build an even bigger and better ISTAT!
