FEATURE The Jewel in the Interlake's Shining Crown By: Kerri Taverner Interlakepulse * www.interlakepulse.com D 6 iageo, the makers of the whisky brand, Crown Royal, won a world title for their Northern Harvest Rye which has been labeled a "masterpiece" by renowned British whisky writer Jim Murray. In his 13th annual Whisky Bible, Murray names Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye as his pick for the 2016 World Whisky of the Year, giving it a designation of a record-tying 97.5 out of 100 points. This remarkable recognition marks the first time a Canadian whisky has ever received this honour. And an award like Murray's being heralded throughout the world makes one proud to be a Canadian, a Manitoban and darn right - an Interlaker! Made for royalty, Crown Royal was first created as a gift for the King and Queen of England in celebration of their visit to Canada in 1939 and was available exclusively in Canada until 1964. To this very day, every drop of Crown Royal blended whisky continues to be crafted to meet those royally uncompromising standards. To many discerning palates, Crown Royal is the very best whisky of all whisky brands. Crown Royal is produced solely here in the Interlake. Nestled along the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, on the edge of the Town of Gimli, Diageo's dedicated group of workers give their time and passion overseeing the creation of Crown Royal blended Canadian whiskies. Acting as proud stewards, these men and women perform the same processes that generations of Crown Royal workers have faithfully performed. Hearty ingredients are carefully combined with the Interlake's distinctively smooth water, which is naturally filtered through the limestone beneath Lake Winnipeg. Crafted from resilient natural ingredients that withstand Manitoba's climate extremes - like our challenging winter conditions (when temperatures lower than minus 30 degree Celsius are the norm) and alternately our hot summer temperatures (which rise to higher than plus 30 degrees Celsius), the temperature swings in Gimli have a profound impact on the smoothness of Crown Royal - and the character of the residents who passionately produce it. The maturing barrels experience extreme temperature swings, causing the wood to expand and contract with that fluctuation, which slowly adds to the whisky's developing character. Fifty of the finest whiskies are meticulously blended to create the signature smoothness of Crown Royal. Distilled to this day in the Coffey Still (named after the man who invented it, Aeneas Coffey), it's the only known still of its kind in North America. This Coffey Rye whisky brings the signature creaminess to the Crown Royal deluxe blend. "We couldn't be more proud," said Alistair Kidd of Diageo Canada, which bought the Crown Royal line from Seagram in 2000. "Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye showcases the rye whisky that is integral to making Canadian whisky unique, and is a testament to the incredible distilling and blending that takes place in Gimli." Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye is a rare jewel of a whisky and it is an honour to recognize its sparkle in the Interlake's Shining Crown. So come on out to the Interlake and try the World's best Whisky! http://www.interlakepulse.com
