T

icks are not insects rather, they are small crawling arachnids (in
the spider family). Hundreds of different kinds of ticks exist in our
world. Many of them carry bacteria, viruses or other pathogens that
through the bite of an infected tick can cause disease in humans and/or
animals.
In Manitoba, the deer tick or black-legged tick is the primary species responsible for spreading tick-borne diseases to humans like: Lyme disease (symptoms of Lyme include flu-like symptoms and a bulls-eye rash that appears in
about 30 days), anaplasmosis and babesiosis.
An aggressive tick from the Southern United States called the lone star
tick, also known to transmit Lyme disease or a closely related illness has been
found in Manitoba. They look similar to an average wood tick, but the female
ticks have a single white spot on their backs. In Manitoba due to travelling
pets and bird migration and with the province's warming temperatures, the
pests could have a better chance at becoming self-sustaining in Manitoba.
A spokesperson for Health Canada said while individual lone star ticks have
been found and tracked in the country, the species is not currently established
in Canada.
People are asked to take pictures of any suspect ticks, and submit them to

It is important that Manitobans and our visitors protect themselves from
all species of tick, including the black-legged tick. Generally, they are found
where the animals they feed on live, in wooded and grassy areas. They climb
up grasses and bushes waiting for an animal to pass by. Ticks thrive in damp
environments and are less active in hot, dry weather.
Avoid and prevent bites by focusing on your clothing. If you are heading into grassy, wooded or forested areas: tuck pants into socks, wear long
sleeves, or jacket, cover up any exposed skin before heading out, also using an
insect repellent containing DEET.
It's important to find and remove any tick as soon as possible. Do daily tick
checks on yourself, your children and your pets. The longer a tick stays on you,
the more likely it will transmit disease, if possible.
Have fun outdoors, play safe!
